HIGHLAND FLING........

Just had a great drive to the North West highlands earlier in the week........Northumberland - Coldstream - Edinburgh - Stirling - Callander - Glencoe - Fort William - Inverness ( Monday) Inverness - Tain - Bonar bridge - Lairg - Tongue - Durness - Kylesku - Ullapool - Inverness (Tuesday) Inverness - back home via the A9/A1. The drive from Inverness up to Tongue and then back down the west coast is brilliant......some totally stunning scenery and almost empty roads......883 miles in total.......only negative , seemingly Arctic temperatures and wind chill for this time of year!! pg]110183[/pg]

You could say that about the whole West coast. But then again if the weather was always nice the roads would be much busier. It has been bloody cold at times the past week or so.

Some cracking places to drive around up there tho.

I've covered most of that territory when visiting my brother, who lives between Inverness and Nairn, close to the airport. Lovely place to drive, as long as you haven't got a dozy old fart doing 20mph in front of you, with no hope of overtaking... especially on either of the roads on the side of Loch Ness.

Unfortunately I've only driven round there in a tin-top, as it's too far to take the Locost.

Raining in Fort William....

Stopped for a coffee in Fort William.....it wasn't raining!!! Worst place was from Ledmore junction to Ullapool........horizontal rain and hail.......couldn't see a thing. but it was worth it for the run from Durness to Kylesku and beyond......swooping curves and crests with a magical vista at every turn. If you can.....go!!!!

Best thing is the fact that the road surface is actually maintained to a much better standard than here in Cumbria, the views are just a bonus 😁 maybe worth adding the Falkirk Wheel to your itinerary for the next trip. There's always another trip!

Sounds like a brilliant trip. For info the tourist board up here are trying to put together a Scottish version of Route 66 called the North Coast 500. Sounds like you've done most of it but it's worth keeping an eye out for mentions of it.

Google Map Route

North Coast 500 (holding page) The site isn't quite live yet

Funny you should say that, we were down in and around Whitehaven couple of weeks back and we really noticed how poor the roads were roads were...
I though our council was bad, but some of the roads were shockingly bad, how do you guy put up with it?

There were some routes uploaded onto the Rhocar site a while back which worked through the possibilities too. Great initiative on the part of the tourist board

It is pretty poor I buckled an mgf alloy on the TR7 just driving around they don't seem to do proper repairs with bitumen to keep the surface intact. The modern technique seems to involve a couple of shovel fuls of tarmac thrown in the hole which by the time they get to it is down to the sub base and they drive over it with the Transit to semi compact it. Obviously this is done with such speed that they keep the engine running through out and next time it rains we are back to the start.
As an exercise in job creation its a master piece but even without a qualification in highway engineering I can see that its crap. I wonder what job satisfaction the highway engineer gets from seeing the road system degenerate
