Driving the Mille Miglia route !!!!!

I would like to drive to Italy , then drive around the route of the Mille Miglia , then return via the Alpine passes including Stelvio.....I would love to hear from anyone who has done all , or part of this , regarding costs , best time of year ? etc. etc. Really just wondering if there is anyone else with or who has had the same seemingly mad idea......

Do it! There's nothing better on an Alpine pass than a kit car at full chat... except a BEC kit car.

A group of us do a tour every year. 10 days, 2-3000 miles depending on start point, mixture of hotels and camping and £1000-1500...ish all in. We go in late June as it's late enough to get better weather and the passes open but early enough not to be too busy.

Just to wet your appetite, this is Italy...

I've got a 30lt tank. That gives me 150mile range in the mountains and up to 200 cruising the m/way (though that is pushing my luck). Regular m/way stops to stretch make for a better trip and in the countryside and mountaint we tend to keep topped up whenever the opertunety arrises.

For the long m/way slogs it's best to get a toll pass. Sticks in the 'screen and you sail through the booths without having to unstrap and reach across and the bill goes to your c/card. You can get them through SANEF here in UK but there are better deals if you wade through the French registration with APRR. Mine only costs a couple of euro for any month I use it in plus the toll charges.

I am just back from spectating on the section of the route on the Sirmio peninsula, there was a time control at Sirmione, my pictures turned out crap but I will post what I have.

I haver seen so many Merc 300SL Gullwings in my life sadly one was involved in a major crash when it was hit by a spectators BMW 1 series that driver of which had lost control.
Undoubted star of the show were Brundle & Bruno Senna in the D Type also a big cheer for Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass.

Some of the 1930s coupe bodied Alfas were just so gorgeous I wanted to steal one.

The guys in the pre-war MGs deserve a special round of applause

Similar to but not as well known and IMO more fun from the spectators' viewpoint is the GP Nuvolari in Sept.
We've been two or three times and it just gets better.
Last year we went in the hairdresser's and being bright red and open top the officials along the route were waving us through along with the participants (just be careful to give them priority and not get in the way!).
In fact in one town square we were fighting off the promotional girls who were trying to give us all manner of goodies!
The start in Mantova is awesome as they all collect in the main square prior to departure.
Last year I pressed the flesh with Andrea Zagato, Dieter Quester and others.
See you there?
Cheers, Pewe10
