Any auto electricians on here? need help ford Immobiliser?.

Was in the car earler (puma 1.7 V-reg) and the car died while going round a round-a-bout. When you put the key and turn it the dash will come on and all electrics work but it wont start. The starter won't work and there are no noises from the relays or fuel pump? i'm suspecting the immobiliser/ecu is at fault.

The red light flashes untill i turn the ignition on then stops. So i removed the end of the ignition barrel and used a screwdriver with the key well away from the sensor and the same thing happens. On our ford KA the light flashes then goes red for a few secs before going off where as the puma just stops as soon as i turn the key.

Also the remote locking is still working fine.



Im i right to be thinking its the immobiliser? Any other suggestions?

No if the red light goes out its not the Immobilizer. It would flash quickly if that was the fault.

Early cars had a solid light come on for 10s then go out. They changed this after97 ish

I would look for a broken earth.

Ecu contols fuel pump relay and starter motor relay ect so also check fuses and engine control relay.

If you pull the 3 pin plug of the coil, see if you get 12v on the center pin with ignition on.

Its powered from the same relay.

checked all fuse's all good. just bout to check the coil. cheers.

yes i'm getting a 12v reading from the centre pin.

Would check for earths. Once its un immobilized it shouldnt cut in without powering down the ecu.

The fact it was on a roundabout says to me poor/ broken connection.

You have checked all fuses inside and engine bay ?

all the fues in the car and engine bay are intact. i have a 12v supply to the coil but nothing else.

The ECU is held in with 2 rivits so cant get at it till tomoz to check if the ecu is getting power.

Dont suppose you have a ECU pin diagram so i know which is the live and earth so i can check?

All earths i can see in the engine bay look fine. no damage and well fixed.

earths are pins 24, 25, 51, 77, 103

Switched lives from engine controle relay are 71, 97

Kam or perm live is 55

If the red LED is flashing then you have power to the ECU, so I wouldn't bother trying to pull the ECU out just yet. You can easily check for any immobilser/PATS faults using just the LED (Do a Google search for Ford PATS LED test).

Have you confirmed that the ignition switch contacts are ok? Do you get +12V on the grey wire with the key in position III? Check the contacts of the start inhibit relay - Pin 2 is switched to +12V from the grey wire as above, and pin 1 is switched to 0v by the ECU. The ECU will inhibit the start for all sorts of reasons (ie. automatic gearbox not in neutral, and so on.) and not just immobiliser problems.

Some other quick ideas...
Reasons for no starter motor:

  • Immobiliser/PATS
  • Start inhibit relay
  • Solenoid


Reasons for no fuel pump:

  • Fuses F18, F28, F35
  • Power hold relay
  • Inertia switch (big red switch near ECU)

Thank you for the help guys. only just got in from a long day, 4am start and 6pm finish so wont get the chance to do anything tonight.

Just a thought... you sure it's not the inertia switch? It's in the passenger kick panel in a Puma if I remember right, right in the line of fire of the passenger's foot or anything rolling about in the footwell.

Might be way out, but for a 1 minute check, it's worth looking.

Car is now fixed. The ECU/immobiliser was at fault. replaced it and it now runs.
