I've been trying to find a source of the rivets used to fit the body kit on my XR2. They were a blind rivet, but fitted into a plastic sleeve
closed on one end. I assume the purpose was to stop water getting into the sills where the rivets were fitted.
Excuse my rather crude drawing....
rivet
The red bit being the plastic sleeve, blue being a standard blind rivet.
Anyone know what these things are called and/or where I can get them?
Cheers, Chris
Never seen one like that but here in the States we have what is called a "structural pop rivet". The end is closed off instead of open like normal pop rivets. Russ
Is it something like these sell?

If not maybe worth a call?

We use those kind of rivets for attaching the speakers to the doors on the Toyota Auris, probably going to be mega bucks from a main dealer. Might be worth a look though.
search for 'sealed rivets'.
depending on the size you want I may have some for you.
Sealed rivets are slightly different, they have a once peice head that wraps over the stem which does not stick through the head.
Like these: http://www.zygology.com/1/images/others/prsr.pdf
or
They are water resistant, but dont have a plastic cap on them to seal them.

rivets + rustoleum paint?
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'd really like to use the original spec item if at all possible. Worst case I could use a regular rivet and
just cover it in underseal, but even though it won't be seen, I'll know it's a botch.
Chris
have you tried asking at Ford Chris? When i was doing up a Mk1 Golf i found a smaller VW dealership who were very helpful with old obscure bits. They checked old micro fiches etc to locate what i needed. I wouldnt be surprised if the plastic sleeve is an attempt to isolate the rivet and prevent electolytic action, sounds like you are right to try and get correct fixings.
What about Frosts?
Resurecting an old thread I know, but I've spotted them on eBay...

However, £7 + post for 5!! I'll need about 20. Surely there is a source of these other than paying this rip-off merchant? Ford can't have
been the only manufacturer to use them!
Chris
They just look like normal black rivets to me.
£2 postage!! defo rip off. ask him for the part no's.
Try these, used much the same as pop rivets, much stronger and the end of the mandrel breaks off in situ forming an watertight rivet.
