Gap in the kit car market?
hicost blade - 26/12/09 at 09:09 PM

I know I have just ripped this topic off from the pistonheads forum but I thought it was an interesting one that you lot my have a view on

Anyway

Do any of you guys see a gap in the market for a new type of kitcar

I do

I posted mine on the pistonheads and it’s as follows:

A VW type 2 split screen camper based around a FWD VAG 1.8T or 1.9TDI 150 or a Subaru boxer turbo (Impreza/forester with the transfer box locked like that V storm thingy) mounted in the back of a space frame chassis with properly designed independent suspension and disk brakes so it goes up hills, round corners and it would stop properly. Probably still brake down if I built one!!

The body moulds would be simple, most of the furniture is easy to buy in flat-pack from DUB specialists, all the windows are flat (apart from those bus ones) and best of all you would have a wider audience than the mainstream kit car builders. Just imagine all of those wannabe re-born/weekend (but have a well paid job) hippies at these festivals

I would have one to tow the track car to the racetrack with

And you could sell the replacement panels to the nutters restoring real ones

blimey you could well be on to some thing there!!! i have thought of doing the 1.8t on a genuine camper but would have proved mega expensive to buy a good split screen one. i would be your first customer or bussiness partner

scudderfish - 26/12/09 at 09:37 PM

If you use a Subaru donor, why not 4WD?

hicost blade - 26/12/09 at 10:02 PM

4wd might work

Any more gaps??

tegwin - 26/12/09 at 10:20 PM

Are there not huge issues with foward driven vehicles (IE, driver infront of the front axle line) when it comes to IVA?

RK - 26/12/09 at 10:21 PM

I like it. I know someone with two V DUB camper vans, that don't ever work properly.

hicost blade - 26/12/09 at 10:24 PM

Sit the driver on top or slightly behind the front axle, In fact sod it why not put them in the middle as well ala Mclaren F1!

hicost blade - 26/12/09 at 10:35 PM

You could even supply a can of rust brown paint to make it look authentic!

McLaren F1 Camper?!? Now you're talking!

hicost blade - 26/12/09 at 10:42 PM

I like the idea of it being a tow car for track days, just imagine chilling in the back with a cup of tea with the heater on in a rain shower while the everyone else is huddled under leaky gazebo’s ahhh lovely!!!

imp paul - 27/12/09 at 08:42 AM

not very locost lol

designer - 27/12/09 at 09:28 AM

Not keen.

Probably better to buy a McLaren M1 replica; better looking, cheaper and probably better performance.

Think this car will continue to be a passed around until it dies.

Also, another company with no address which, I think, should be illegal.

hicost blade - 27/12/09 at 11:15 AM

Yeah it's a bit expensive when you compare it to this ADR3 @ £32,500 +VAT

Something like this:

www.race-taxi.ch

500BHP porsche 996 chassis with VW T1 shell on top.

The only problem you'll have with GRP T1/T2 shell is that GRP always deforms and with the large panels this will be a pain in the *ss to get nice

I was under the impression that subaru used to make a VW type 2 replica, well sort of.

I want a replica of either a DS or a Farcel Vega Excellence, if noone makes them thats my gap. I read somewhere that since challenger stopped noone makes an E-Type replica, I would think there would be a market for one.

I reckon the gap could have been filled by this had it become available. This thread is almost two years old now and AFAIK, it's still not available, which is a real shame and a massive lost opportunity IMHO...........
