refused insurance
cd.thomson - 5/5/10 at 09:15 AM

oh dear...

just got refused insurance on my kit from 2gether.

"We no longer insure under-25s on 2 seater sports cars unless they have significant experience of driving that type of vehicle".

Any other options for a young driver (23)?

flak monkey - 5/5/10 at 09:17 AM

Adrian Flux and Footman James

What engine size is it?

Rules have changed recently it seems so that its almost impossible to get insurance on a bike engine or 2 litre car engine if under 25.

55ant - 5/5/10 at 09:19 AM

thats not good

why have the rules changed? is it because us younguns keep crashing?

eddie99 - 5/5/10 at 09:20 AM

Try Keith Youngs at Allstyles insurance, U2U coming your way!

Quite right....

Allstyles give very good quotes, but they needed a Cat 2 approved immobiliser for my policy, which I dont have. Though this was down to the agreed value I believe. So I ended up paying more with 2gether in the end.

not much hope for me then, i'm 3 years your senior. should i be arranging my funeral now?

[Edited on 5-5-10 by Fozzie]

cd.thomson - 5/5/10 at 09:44 AM

I will keep you all updated on my progress

Adrian flux:

£954 just for me doing 3000 miles in a year £7500 value.

Putting my old man on the policy (a must) will "significantly" increase that

ETA: two weeks ago I got a quote for £230 from 2gether. Now this... If I can't get a quote for less than £500 with just me on the policy doing less than 5000 miles then I'm literally going to have to sell it.

what a ballache!

cd.thomson - 5/5/10 at 10:05 AM

great. enjoy it.

eddie99 - 5/5/10 at 10:06 AM

Adrian Flux seem to generally have high prices. I will be very surprised if Allstyles dont get you a quote under £500.

tegwin - 5/5/10 at 10:15 AM

Can you look at this from a different angle?

If you and your dad will be driving the car equal amounts then why doesnt he take out a policy and then add you as a named driver?

I do this with my TVR, its all above board and gets around the age issue...

aren't quotes valid for a month or so?

cd.thomson - 5/5/10 at 10:17 AM

ive asked each place about having my dad as the registered keeper and me as a named driver and they've refused to quote for that situation.

the thing is my dad has a sp10, cu80 (so 6 points in total) and a £1200 claim.

Lars - 5/5/10 at 10:21 AM

then put your mum on instead?

tomgregory2000 - 5/5/10 at 10:39 AM

try MSM insurance, thay insured me last year when i was 24 running red top with value £10K fully comp, 3000miles a year, think it cost me about £400

Can't he pay the difference?

cd.thomson - 5/5/10 at 10:58 AM

Yes he will pay the difference, but I still can't afford the intial £1000 for me.

Still not heard anything back from allstyles.

What do they count as 'significant experience' ????

BenB - 5/5/10 at 10:59 AM

I'd say "well it's a good thing I've got lots of experience driving 2 seater sports cars then"

Tiger Super Six - 5/5/10 at 11:07 AM

I had that question asked when I insured an Elise. I had done Caterham days and Palmer days and they said that was fine.

Ask them if a Caterham day counts as experience and if so get yourself booked on one £200 and jobs a carrot, plus you'll have a great day out

Is this a renewal or will this be the first time you've been insured on a rear wheel drive sports car?

speed8 - 5/5/10 at 11:21 AM

MSM or maybe sureterm. Or as mentioned get on a couple of caterham days. The slalom day that they sometimes organise is good fun (there might even be a pistonheads one on the go soon)

cd.thomson - 5/5/10 at 11:26 AM

its first time insurance.

i need it insured as of monday so a caterham day isnt possible unfortunately.

This really isnt looking hopeful.

Tiger Super Six - 5/5/10 at 11:29 AM

Say you've done one and then get one booked.

Pistonheads are running a competition at the moment with regional and main finals, that's under £200 to enter and you might get 2 or 3 days out of that, if you win then your insurers really couldn't argue

tul214 - 5/5/10 at 11:32 AM

What if you fitted a smaller engine such as a 1.1/1.3 just to get you driving. Then in 2yrs time swap the engine back in?

Mark

a 1.6 pinto would be the cheapest and simplest thing to fit but I dont have the time, money or inclination to do it.

I'm completely fed up of messing about with the thing if im honest!

Just wanted to actually get some enjoyment out of it.

Fozzie - 5/5/10 at 11:56 AM

Guys ... please......Less of the swearing ..... at least use some expletives.....
I have had to edit a few posts here.....including the ones who had quoted the 'offending' post ...

Fozzie .... Admin

GavR - 5/5/10 at 11:59 AM

I'm with footman James, Im 20 and have a Mk Indy 2.0l valued at 8k and 3000 miles per year and I pay just over £650 for the year with no years no clams

hopefully that might go down next year because I'll be 21

hopefully.... Lol

andylancaster3000 - 5/5/10 at 12:02 PM

Odd, pretty sure we're with 2gether and have just been re-quoted at £220 after one previous year.

Have they changed their policy or does one year class as 'experience' with such cars?

I'm 22 and dad is older than the sun (53). We were told it makes no difference who you were insured with as they go solely by they highest risk anyway...

craig1410 - 5/5/10 at 12:09 PM

I get my insurance from Backford Bloor. My renewal last month was £115 for 1500 miles for my 3.5 litre V8 Locost although this was a bit of a special deal just for me...

http://www.kitcar-insurance.co.uk/

Cheers,
Craig.

scootz - 5/5/10 at 12:13 PM

Bloomin eck

That's outrageous!

Good luck with getting the price down!

Hugh_ - 5/5/10 at 12:23 PM

I'm 23 and with MSM on a 2.1 Pinto locost valued at 6k and paying ~£450 iirc.

The Fury was ~£600 with Adrian Flux when I was 21.

nemesis v12 - 5/5/10 at 01:24 PM

just be glad you dont live here in LIVERPOOL i got quoted £2500 by flux and ive got 10 years no claims and am nearly 40 Rescued attachment 100_0986.JPG

I too am with Frank Pickles, paying £120 for parts only and 7000 miles
Not sure if they cover younger drivers though, may be worth a try

cd.thomson - 6/5/10 at 08:46 AM

Allstyles:

£1887.20 for just me
£2827.07 for me and my dad

scootz - 6/5/10 at 11:01 AM

cd.thomson - 6/5/10 at 11:07 AM

msm have come back with £1249.77 for both me and my dad 1500 miles policy which is getting more realistic and 2gether have offered to have a proper stab on getting me a quote.

cd.thomson - 6/5/10 at 12:40 PM

no quote from 2gether.

It does my nut in.

me: 23 years old, clean licence, £850 claim - fair play im not the best investment but no quote??

dad: 50 million years old, 6 points sp10 (speeding) and cu80 (mobile phone), £1200 claim - £125 for a years insurance!!!

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

2GETHER INS - 10/5/10 at 05:34 PM

Hi ,

As discussed we could offer a TPFT rate no problems at a competitive rate.

We also had an offer for your father alone.

Thanks

Gary

Hellfire - 10/5/10 at 06:43 PM

Craig,

give some of these others a try and don't give up just yet. Might be worth considering the TPFT offer just to get it on the road for a year or two.......

Phil

cd.thomson - 10/5/10 at 06:46 PM

ah thats a good list, thanks hellfire.

Gary, I'm waiting for a call back on the TPFT front - not frustrated with you, just at the amount of grief the car has given me!

beaver34 - 10/5/10 at 09:19 PM

cd.thomson - 10/5/10 at 09:20 PM

Sounds like you're going to have to get Fire and Theft for now and make sure you don't crash it.

How are you supposed to get experience if they won't let you? I'd have told them that I've been driving it for years without insurance...
