Wire sizes and theory?

Guys

If I have a piece of wire with a 1 mm core and another two pieces with a 0.5 mm core, if I ran current through the two pieces would it carry the same amount as the single 1 mm core piece or not?

I hope that's as clear as your mums finest crystal?

If you're talking cross-sectional area then yes. If you're talking diameter then no.

technically yes, however there are subtle differences as the two 0.5mm cores will dissapate heat faster and thus stay slightly cooler with a lower resistance. This is more important with fuse wires though, since temperaure is crucial. Hence why you arent meant to put multiple wires into a rewirable fuse holder.

No

two .5 wires will not carry anywhere near the same amount of current as a 1mm wire.

area of 2 x 0.5mm = 2.5sqmm
area of 1mm = 9sqmm Rescued attachment wire.jpg
