Starter Switch

Hi I've been trying to sort out the wiring from my donor car (1970 Escort GT) and I have a problem with the start switch wiring.

I think that the wiring should be something like this:

My problem is that the ignition/starter switch connector is grounded. So if I tried to start the car there would be short circuit. Does this mean that the start switch is damaged, or I’m missing something? Rescued attachment start_switch_2.JPG

i cant rember exactly how mine was wired as its a different style Lucas item, but you will need a possitive and a negative connection across the switch terminals as it energises the relay to switch the main starter wiring, ive got a spare starter relay if you need it?

What excatly do you mena by that?

Are you saying the ignition/starter switch has a connection to earth e.g. chassis or -ve battery terminal?

Or are you saying it is shorted to the ignition coil terminal?

If the latter, then measure the resistance between those two terminals - there sill be a coil that when energised closes a contact to complete the circuit between those two big terminals on the right. The coil will have a relatively low resistacne that may gool you into thinking there is a short.

To rest, remove the switch from the car and put 12 V across - you should hear a click of the switch is working.

Problem Solved!

The multimeter was giving a bad reading. Change the battery and everything was ok!
