guage help... (I'm rubbish)
Morning all,
after a previous thread, I'm considering getting some of these.
Gauges
It also says I need one of these
Pulse thingy
Any one used these before? is it realtivley easy?
I'me running a xflow and megajolt, witha 4 speed box.
where would the pulse generator go?

not seen that pulse generator before but it seems to fit into a gearbox, and that won't go in a ford mk2 escort box.
if you know the type of pulse, then you should be able to knowck something up that will do that - I am working on making soemthing useing a hall
effect - someone on here a=has already made something similar so a search will reveal all.

The gauge just needs some sort of pulse input (pulses per mile) to calculate vehicle speed. Most work on hall effect, i.e. inductive coils.
Also known as transducers.
You need one of these if your gearbox was originally intended to have a mechanical speedo. They run off the existing drive and convert the mechanical
action into an electronic signal.
Speedy Cables supply transducers for a huge rande of gearbox applications.
Plus, always had good service. Such as the replacement drive cable they sent me for free after mine snapped. They didnt even want to see the old one!

Have a play with the redundant ABS sensor + small magnets on the prop, pinion or CV joints. $35 + postage seems a little steep.
NB/ make sure you plug the hole in the gearbox.

what redundant ABS sensor? the hole in the gearbox is currently exposed, i will plug it, but how bad woul;d it be if i forgot lets say? (i have a
feeling it may have been run without it before i got it)

The sierra I had was fitted with ABS so had couple of sensors on the back wheels that I plucked out.
I also had some range rover ones, they all work in the same fashion, its just a cheap hall sensor.
I think you will find in normal use you will not see much oil drop out the hole but on a steep incline it can run down the tail shaft and out the
back. Its also not a good idea to leave open as dust and dirt will work its way in.

Inductive and hall sensors are very different animals!
An ABS sensor is a variable reluctance device (just like crank sensor) and doe not require magnets to be fixed to the rotating part, it just needs
ferrous teeth. They give out AC signals that increase in both frequency and voltage as the teeth pass the sensor more quickly.
The gearbox speedo sensors are almost always hall based, and give out a fixed DC voltage pulse, so an ABS sensor would probabaly not be suitable (and
could cause damage to the speedo) without further signal conditioning.

Ive some of these gauges all ready, im yet to fit / convert the speedo sensor to my type gearbox. I was going to speak to ETB gauges and see what
sender they do etc.
The only thing i have found that the rev counter (running via my edis unit) is slow to respond eg if i rev to about 3000rpm and back down again the
rev counter is still moving to the 3000 mark 
Also the little bulbs that go in the small gauges have all snapped off (cheaply made - need to go to maplins to get something better)

My gauges are green so i need to keep just normal bulbs really of ill have all strange colours at night.
Unless plain white LED

Ive been busy in the garage converting my shark speed sender to fit my ford type 9 gearbox.
The speed sender has a shaft running through it. One end has the male square end you can see and inside is a female square end you cant see.
I removed the white bung in th end and pushed the shaft through and swapped it around then put the white bung in.
Simple, just need to make a bracket to hold it.
