Duratec Alternator pulley - is this spacer a requirement?

Evening all,

In the process of building a duratec locost, I have bought a denso alternator, and now a pulley to suit. The only snag is, with the pulley fitted, there is a spacer behind it, and this pushes the pulley too far towards the end of the shaft, so there isn't much engagement on the threads. Without the spacer the pulley fouls on the alternator.

Can the spacer be turned down in order to compromise, or should a half nut be used instead of the flange nut with recessed threads that was supplied?

Here are some pictures to explain, note the recess in the bottom of the nut, right hand side of the first picture.

Want to know so that I can decide where my alternator mounts will go!

Many thanks

Ed

You can see in this pic the but is only half on as you suggest link

Mine fits like this

If it was me I would turn the spacer down or can it be replaced with some washers. It looks like it stops the bearing moving forwards.

I've done a few and have done them in different ways.

On one I cut the face deeper in the lathe to give the nut more purchase. On another I cut the rear in the lathe to replace the spacer. And on another I trimmed down the spacer.

If your making the brackets to suit then it makes no odds as what ever you do will only be a change of a few mm.
