Brake light wiring

All the diagrams make it look easy. Not so. This is because I don't know how to isolate the rear lights, without activating all the other lights when the switch is on.

You want all of them on for indicators and hazards, but only the rear ones for brakes.

PS A follow up to previous rantings about hazards and indicators. I got the indicators working. The hazards would only work, though, with TWO relays, one for each side. Otherwise, the indicators would activate both sides. I have a two position switch, with 3 pins (one of which is earth). Now I still have to figure out how to get my dash LED to flash while turning right! Works fine going the other way.

A diagram of what you want to do may help i dont really understand the question either.

Are you on about the brakes or indicator/hazard.

the indicators and hazard can be solved easy enough from other posts and i can whip up a diagram for you if you provide what switches lights and warning lamps you have on a simple diagram.

linky to a diagram for indicator/hazard

read to the bottom for the correct config.

My hazard switch has two pins, not three.

OK, I want brake lights to illuminate the back lights. I want hazards to operate all the lights, and I want the indicators to indicate left and right. I have the last two parts figured out, but not the first.

Sorry if it doesn't make any sense. The more I try to draw things out, and wire them on the car, the less sense it makes to me. It would be nice to just wire up a Sierra switch or use those fancy push buttons but we don't have those here and I have to improvise.

pic not including dash indicator/hazard light.

As you can see, with my way, there is no way to get the wire to the rear lights and not the others at the same time.

Surely tail, brake and turn lights should be separate lights? There should be separate wiring for each function.

As the OP's based in canada, are you using the brake lights as turn signals as well ?

if so see linky

wiring help
wiring help

I have modded the diagram to show where you would need to add the wiring and insert some diodes to stop any feed back.

I'm not sure if this is what you are exactly after though but it would make the rear lights work as brakes and flasher unit.

also note that i removed the feed from the front side lights to the rears and replaced them to come straight from the relays.

With diodes all you have to remember is that the band must face the direction that you want to stop feed back from happening.

Hope this helps.

I am using one light on each side, with two inputs on each.
Brake/Turn and Tail.

Where in the circuit would that suggested relay go? And why didn't I get to see all these builders in Kent while I was there??? I didn't meet anybody at Detling.

I did not suggest putting a relay in.

i assumed the links between the front and rear lights were for the flashing of the hazards/turn.

if you are using 1 feed for turn/brake then just put the green wires on the same connection as the black and red ones. that will get you working for braking and turning/hazard.

if you are having the front lights flash when the hazards are on do you need the tail lights to flash also? or just the turn/brake light?

also how many feeds can the front lights take if they are to flash? is there just 1 or more?.

I ran all the lights on one side together to run the indicator for that side. If I run the Brake light wire to that side, obviously all the lights go on, not just the back ones.

I am not about to wire diodes all over the place. I am not that capable.

But thank you very much for the suggestion! I am sure I need another hazard switch like everyone else seems to use. That way everything wires into it and nothing crosses or feeds back.

It was easier and cheaper to get diodes than a hazard switch, so I have 8 of them. I'll let you know how it works!

Merci again everyone.
