Behind dash wiring
Hi everybody,
im going to have to start the dreaded job of the wiring, ive been putting it off for sooooooooo long, only the threat of the iva test is making me
pull my finger out and get on with it.
My questions are :
Can you guys and girls show me what you have done behind your dash?
What plugs have you used to join the loom off the colum to the car loom?
What are the best books to have to hand?

plug - I used 20 way PC connector from maplins - cheapest one I could find  ; crimp and solder wires on. There should be enough connections; use
more than one for higher currents e.g. earth.
here is rear in process of being wired - I though I had photo of it completed with the connector but seems not.
books? we don;t need no stinking ooks

You don't necessarily need a book. Just some time, some patience, a good loom diagram and some multiway connectors. I got mine from VWP (vehicle
wiring products).
The only thing I did on mine which was a bit stupid is do the wiring in fairly thin wire. It hasn't melted yet but if I was doing it again
I'd use something rated to more than 6A!!!!

Mr Tegwin - that is an disgrace. Go and stand in the corner wearing the pointy hat with the large "D"!!!
There is no escuse. Look in my photo archive/dashboard
wiring before - is how I purchased it = a mess
after - is with a fair bit of time tidying it up, fixing relays to panel, taping up to make a loom and using some sort of colour convention.
you can see the multi-way plug - it is best if there is one plug to connect to dash as it make it easier to unplug (I have the hazards on antoehr plug
so it is 2 really).

I don't get why peeps don't use the standard one Henry provides... I stripped the loom out the Sierra, laid it out on the wall and
stripped out circuits I didn't need. Then the loom simply plugged into the ford switches and it even suprised me everything worked first
time!
This procedure learnt me where every wire went and once laid out on the car was over long and all the lighting circuits etc where simply cut back.

i just used connectors i found in the Durite Catalogue.
as for paperwork, all i used was a printout of the R1 wiring diagram

MIne looks a right pigs ear behind the dashboard but it works. Ive used durite multiconnectors on everything.

They are like the ones here at cbs
Iv got the white ones and the water proof ones at the bottom. Mine were durite from lucas but as theyr down the pan now thats no use.

I used 24 pin connectors from a computer PSU extension. The wires are cut and soldered, not the best method but it's neat and easy to
disconnect.
P.S. Most of these connectors are no longer used as we bought an Acewell Dash.
