Batteries - Varley or Odyssey
vinny1275 - 16/3/08 at 08:29 PM

Hi all,

Does anyone have an opinion on which of these batteries is better? We're running a boat anchor, so am looking at the 680 cranking amp varieties (no screen so no heaters or wipers). Are there significant differences between them - looking at the specs they could almost be made by the same people, very nearly same size, weight and performance?

TIA

Vince

Both look the same and behave the same.
Odesey seem a bit cheaper

Hi Vince

You probably won't want one as teeny as mine, but it just doesn't seem to lose charge no matter how long its sat - a top-up with the optimate-type charger takes seconds, so can't speak highly enough of Odyssey!

Oh and the orange matches my Gulf colour scheme!

I use a ctek charger on my varley 25 and I have an oddesey ready for the Motaliera.
They varley starts the F1-2 K-series no problem.

Thanks guys,

On balance, I think I'll go for the Varley, mainly only because Merlin stock them and I can pick one up next time I'm down there.

Cheers

If you dont mind me asking, why go to the expense of a lightweght battery while using a boat anchor? Are you on the weght limit of a racing series that stipulates i take it a pinto engine perhaps?

^^What he said. The location I want to drop it in is fairly tight. And we had the chassis built with moving to a bike engine in mind, so we may engine swap at some point in the future.

As for weight-saving, I could cut some out by going to the gym more often!!

Cheers
