Well Today I have been back in the garage wiring up my Savage switches on my Dash.

As you will no doubt notice, I fitted an 'Engine Start' button on the Right of the 4 buttons.

This left me with the thoughts of how to wire it in. After some studious deliberations I realised that there was an up side to having used the standard Ford Granada fuse box.
This is that the fuse box comes pre-wired for Automatic transmission, however the relay is not fitted, just a brass bridging piece. So I obtained a red start relay, removed the bridging piece & fitted the relay. Then I located the brown/white earthing wire for that circuit and connected that through the switch to earth.

The result is that any numpty sitting in the passenger seat can press the button as much as they like. I does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Unless that is I am sitting in the drivers seat turning the key at the same time.

It works a TREAT.

erm, ok, but whats the point of a starter button if you have to turn the key at the same time? or do i miss something?

to be fair, that could also have been done with any fuse box too, by putting the button in series with the key switch

How about a cheaper and better way of doing it other than buying a seperate arming switch or some other form of isolator circuit so that the start button CAN'T be operated whilst the engine is running.

Could have used a relay , the type thats switches off when activated?

ISTR an old thread about this, ie the passenger pushing the Start button.

I think the concensus was that a punch in the face usually stops it happening

Personally I thought it was a very simple solution. Fit one relay to EXISTING socket & connect ONE existing wire.

Perhaps I'm missing something like the ability to see an easier solution.

Maybe I shouldn't bother in future.

whilst a clever use of the existing wiring, isnt it a bit odd, making it so your have to press another button whilst turning the key? When the key alone would suffice?

I wouldnt be bothered myself about someone pressing the start button whilst in motion, its quite unlikely to happen and doesnt matter in a BEC afaik!

My start button is the right hand side of the steering wheel so the passenger can't reach it. Coming to think of it, my passengers get strapped in so tight in the six point harness, they couldn't reach anything no matter where it was

^ its what i was gonna say, but his already put it in the middle and trimmed it all in, still, no one's gonna press it

You could use the oil pressure switch... I know of at least once person who has done this. It means you can only turn it over if the oil pressure is low.

What's the point of a start button?
