Evening folks. I bought a couple of batteries today, one for my kit, and the other for the tintop (S reg corsa).

One of them had the fitting shownin the pic on it, and I'm not sure what it is for. It looks like it some kind of fitting to accepta hose, so would it be to meaure the pressure in the battery? or maybe keep it topped up automatically or something?

Any ideas anyone?

Breather/ Vent.

It is indeed a vent, without which the casing could explode!!!

If it is a breather, it seems strange that it is fitted externally like that though. I would have though that any sort of vent/pressure relief arrangement would be located somewhere less likely to be knocked off...

By product of a charge in electrolight is oxygen and hydrogen, best put a pipe on it and vent it away from sparks.

Its the breather for a boot mounted battery, ie where the battery is within the car as opposed to under the bonnet.

In these instances you have tube that vents to open air that you plug on.

AS the battery is going to be mounted under the bonnet, I guess it is okay to leave as is then?

attach a hose to it, and run the other edd away from the engine compartment, and away from exhaust/sparks. You haven't lived until you've had a battery expolde on you from poor routing on the breather. I was riding along on an old motorcycle, when BANG - felt like I'd been kicked in the butt by a mule, battery acid all over the bike and me, etc. Use the breather, lad!
