Fan switch wiring ???
Chippy - 14/4/06 at 07:29 PM

Hi All, does anybody happen to know the correct wiring for the fan switch. I have wired it to control the live feed to the relay, but I'm not sure if this is correct

I beleive you can get away with doing it either way, switching live or neutral, but most people switch the neutral

This is how I have done it and it seems fine.

Hi shortie, can't open your file, I don't seem to support the format that you are using. atb Chippy

ALWAYS switch the live / feed side. If the device develops a fault, you have already isolated the supply at the switch. If you switch the return / earth side, the device is live all the time, and in the event of a fault developing, you could end up with a fire.

Never switch the earth / return side, unless absolutley necessary / or if its unaviodable.

Same reason as to why you put fuses in the live feed side, to disconnect the power in the event of a fault.

You know it makes sense.

Hi wilkingj, so it would seem that the way that I have done it is correct, many thanks. Chippy

Hi mate,

The file is adobe acrobat format, you can get the viewer here http://www.adobe.co.uk/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Used for loads of stuff on the web and lets you re-sizezoom etc.

Should always switch the live for stated reasons above.

Fused (small rating) live to the stat, from the stat to 86 of the relay, 85 to gnd.

Fused live (rated high) to 30 of relay and then from 87 of the realy to positive side of the rad fan, obviously other terminal of the fan to gnd.

Try the above and scroll down to indykids version,i used this with an over ride switch to get the fan on early in summer traffic.

I prefer to switch the ground side. That way you run less wires (less weight and less cost ), and you can easily run a manual switch in dash. Looks like Bob and Indykid have it the way I like, except for that fact that no fuses have been drawn in :p .

Almost all new cars switch the grounds to reduce the amount of live wires running through modules. Also, if I remember right there is some theory about the switches sparking less if on the ground side. Makes them last longer.

The fire prevention aspect is the fuses job. If the live side shorts, the fuse will pop. The switch should not have anything to do with it.

live feed is fused with a 10amp inline before the relay
