Front Indicators...

Spotted these on Ebay as a bargain...they any good?

They'll work fine, but they won't reach far enough to pass the "400mm from the outside edge" rule.
You'll have to put them on extenders somehow.

Any idea how long the stems need to be?

They have longer stems (95mm) and look a bit easier to extend if need be.

The second lot are quite expensive - I only paid around £9 or £10 in my local m/cycle shop.

Here are mine before I went to the SVA



They are the long-stem bendy rubber type, mounted on lumps of nylon that I'd turned up in the lathe. These only just met the regulations, by about 5mm or so.

both will need extending, but it's not rocket science.
the first ones look a bit garish, but are cheap. i'd personally go for the second ones.

just depends how locost you're going

the second ones have a threaded part, so will be much easier to temporarily extend.

All sorted, cheers chaps . I liked the look of those second ones, rather than the normal square type that people like premier wiring sell. They should arrive in the next few days and i will see what they are like. £11.25 seemed reasonable to me since they are brand new etc. They look simple to extend as well with a round stem and central bolt. I should be able to turn something out of either stainless or black nylon.

Ive opted for the cycle wing mounted ones. Got a pair with CF look shells, very smart and very visible. £15 iirc per pair from guess where?? (mac1 - where all my parts seem to come from!)

Only tricky bit is bonding the wires to underneath nice and tight (Wurth bond and seal moment coming on again i feel).

The result of a tenner. They are very nice and well constructed. Think they look a lot nicer than the square ones everyone uses.

Noticed they are rated at 10W. Mr SVA didn't like mine as they are not equivalent light intensity as the rear ones!
Either change rears for 10W or fronts for 21W. (or was I just unlucky?)

Mine use whatever is normally used in bike indicators (I didn't change them) and they are 'king bright! Probably brighter than the 21W landie ones at the back...

This 400mm rule for the indicators on the front - I can't see a reference to it. Ony the Side light and dipped have to 400mm
in.

In my SVA maual the relevant dimesnions are in annex 9.1 (the first annex under lighting), and gives max distance from sides, max height and min height.

Max distance in 400mm separation 500mm unless vehicle is less than 1400mm wide them min 400mm separation. max height 1500mm or 2300mm if impracticable min height 350mm.

Side of vehicle on a se7en is the widest point - usually the rear arches.

This seems - again to be where "E" marked parts for bikes are tested to a different spec. to cars.
They "should" fail SVA, but will most probably be ok for Mot.
Some flasher units may flash too quickly with a smaller load than they were designed for.

We have similar problems with "E" marked headlights that dip vertically for a bike, rather than to the left.

Looking at this image :


I would say that this says the side light is 400mm in from the side but the indicators have to be seperated by 500mm and at least 350mm above the ground. NOT 400mm in from the side!!!! as above!!!!

So would I.... it all comes down to interpretation I guess. That diagram just happens to show the indicators and sidelights aligned...Well IMO.

I would interperate that diagram as the line for the side lights is extended past the indicator bulb to show the measurement to the widest part of the vehicle and not to include the indicator.

As Flak Monkey says it all interpertation.


Further to this - If you look at the ford focus (I know type approved) it's indicators are approximtely 450mm in from the spats(edge of wheel arch). On the inside of the headlamp cluster.


Only had time for a very quick measure as it was a neighbours car. Didn;t get a chance to measure the spacing.

The problem with those indicators is replacing the bulbs... first - you can't get the damned things out, and second you cant get replacement bulbs! Therefore - a replacement bulb will cost you £10... thank you kind sir!!!

You can indeed get the bulbs out, and they are just standard bayonet fitting bulbs.... I checked that (See pic)
