Starter Motor Q

I'm hoping the massed intellect of the LCB members can help with this question. Here are a couple of starter motors.

The s/motor on RH side is my old one, from a 1.6 Capri, with an old Pinto engine. The LH is the "new" unit.

So which one is right for fitting to the Type 9 gearbox? I suspect that it's the LH motor, because the starter teeth of the older RH motor sit much closer to the starter ring gear. I recall that some earlier posts mentioned that some starters had to be fitted with a spacer. Maybe that's the case for the old unit?

You need to see if bolts onto the 9 housing then check if it goes with the flywheel...

Have done some more measuring on the installation of these 2 starter motors.

On the old xflow engine, the starter ring gear is 15mm further back than the Zetec ring gear. So the "new", LH motor is the right one. Except that the mounting diameter of the nose is smaller than the hole provided in the bell-housing. So I'll have to make up a new and separate sandwich plate to suit.

Unless anyone else managed a neater solution?
