Hello all, the relay highlighted in the picture appears to be faulty, so would that stop the engine sparking but allow the starter to turn?
Description
If so, can it be bypassed to test and see the engine will spark?

There's a blue/white wire second left from the relay assembly to a link in the starter relay then a red/white on to the ignition control unit.
I'd be checking continuity and voltage along there.
Also possibly worth checking out the kill switch.
Just my .02c as a non-BECist.

i took the relay box out on my zx10r (bypassed so everything still had continuity) and it wouldn't star - no spark, put it back in and it started straight up first time
Check that there's 12v on the red/ black on the stick coils.
Have you linked out the side stand and clutch switches?

That will only control the fuel pump.

Yes is the short answer, that unit contains 2 relays and the double diode system used to detect the clutch switch/ side stand .
From your previous posts i seem to remember that the fuel pump wasn't running either.
put a neg onto the light blue wire 4th from right and see if it runs.
if it does then issue with clutch switch/ side stand switch
check also that you have 12v on the red/black 1st from left, with the ignition on you should have a permanent feed.

Try putting a temp 12v supply on to red/black wire on coils and then try to start, if it runs then the relay is faulty

Isn't it part of the fuse box?
Yes, it can stop you from sparking. I had a bad one for an 03 R1. If you need one try Malc at Yorkshire Engines, he might be the cheapest and quickest
way of getting a spare.
Do you have the cyclelock? If so, are you sure you have sorted it all out properly? I had one wire that I hadn't run to ground and it caused me a
whole heap of bother. If you don't have cyclelock then its not an issue.
If that diagram is what you have then it definately seems cyclelock related. I would be comparing the diagram with non cyclelock and seeing where the
black wires out of the relay go to.
ETA: Just seen your other posts in that it had been running on a track day.
Tilt switch (the 03 has, don't know about 99). Kill switch, but if the pump runs then you are getting power to the relay.

I don't think it could stop the spark; just the starter and fuel pump. Have you checked continuity from the relay?
I'd look at...
Wiring connectors. Has it got an FIA battery cut-off? If so are all the low tension wires still on?
Have you checked to connectors to the ignition switch?
Someone recently had very similar symptons on here and it turned out to be a loose wire.
Is there a hidden security switch or immobiliser fitted somewhere that could have been accidentally turned off?
Tilt switch is only on injection engines I think, so shouldn't effect your engine. It does kill ignition and pump but not starter though.
Kill switch (if fitted and not by-passed) should stop the starter operating.

Just to clarify, the fuel pump does not work via the relay as I can get if to work by running a direct feed to the pump( new pump).
Have nit seen a kill switch as it runs off sierra column and key.
Is there any way to temporarily bypass the relay?

Right, just been through all the tests in the service manual and all seem ok, except this relay which failed. I will order one from Malc (who I spoke
to this morning and said this relay failing can cause the spark to not work) on Monday and see what happens. I just don't undersatnd what else
it could be?
If still not working then I guess I will have to get a pro in to have a look!
I will re-wire it all in the winter, but want to enjoy it during the summer if possible, and another track day in September
Thanks for all the help and anyone think of anything else at all, I thought of the cyclelock thingy but have not touched any of the wires except the
relay and ICU ones, and that is only to test them!

I know it's frustrating, but if the car worked untill the pump/relay packed up, wait untill you get a new relay before you start changing too
many perameters in your search. if you were anywere on the wirral you could have borrowed my relay and pump
