What a day!!!!, went for a quick blat to see my pal at easingwold we intended a drive up to crayke, brandsby etc, got about a mile from his house, to find the car playing up , pulled over and the 'fuel' hose from the fuel pump to the carb had perished or some how cut due to the jubilee holding it onto the pump. Anyway re- atached it after phoning my pals dad up for some tools when i started it back up and within 5 seconds the pissing thing went up in flames!!!! eventually got it put out but some off the wiring is damaged so help needed in the near future please?????? i bought the car last friday and the nob that had before hasnt had a clue! WHAT A F***ING DAY!!!!!! will post a few pics later.

At least it didnt catch the whole car!

Now its really worth going over the car for a day re tighting bolts, tidy wiring and making sure everything is right. If it looks bad then replace it with good stuff. Its worth it in the long run.

First things first, glad you are OK.
And by the sounds of things the car survived relatively intact too.

Some people on here have seen their cars totally destroyed by fire.

I had a problem with rubber fuel hose perishing a few weeks back. It was proper stuff when I installed it, but that was 3 / 4 years ago. It was just a drip, drip, drip into the transmission tunnel, but it could have built up into a right puddle of petrol, and then any spark could have set it off.

Hose has been replaced entirely now.

I have a fire extinguisher fitted between the seats, and I have another one in the garage.

I thought it was a gonner! yeh i had a fire extinguisher but it wasnt big enough! i will be fitting an electric fuel pump to as the mechanical one kept the fire burning for a while! still hasnt sunk in yet, just need some help from some competent sparky's ben

Sounds like you were lucky. Did you wait for the fuel to evaporate before you started it??

hi, again sorry i couldnt be there but i had the urge for a drive!!!! thanks looks like the workshop will have to be put to its use over the next few weeks! cheers its the electric side of the reapairs that are my downfall so if you are comfortable with wires it would be great to have a knowledgable pair of hands on board! thanks again ben

At least you weren't injured that's the main thing. Fire always gives me the eebie jeebies in a car, I always panic if I think something is stinking like fuel or electrics!

DO NOT USE JUBILEE CLIPS on Fuel Hose.

You should use the full circle clips that clamp evenly all the way round the hose without digging into it.

You want a small version of a Mikalor clamp

OK they are NOT cheap, but will do the job properly.

How much is the rebuild going to cost, compared to the price of some decent clamps?

If the hose is perished, I would replace it, and check any other fuel hoses, and replace at the same time. (probably all the same age)

Anyway.. Hope its not too serious.
If its really bad, then can you claim on your insurance, or isnt it worth it?
(ie lost NCD+ Excess+ premium increase next year versus the repair costs)

At lease no one was injured.

Ouch! Must have been a scary moment, but at least it looks fairly localised and shouldn't be too bad to fix.
