Horn through wash wipe stalk
locosaki - 21/2/09 at 12:18 PM

Hi all,

Got my car going in for an MOT and I've almost over looked the horn !!

I want to wire this through the washer button on the Sierra stalk,My horn has a live feed to it so I require a switched earth,On my stalks as soon as I connect the wire going to the horn to the sierra stalk the horn stays on all the time but when I push in the washer button the horn goes off (working the wrong way round)

Any body know how to over come this ??

Cheers Mike

You could fit a normally closed relay. The current feed will keep the relay open until you press the button. I'll do a diagram if you want?

Hi Hugh,

I diagram would be ideal.

Have you any idea where I would get such a relay ?

Thanks much appreciated.

Mike

Just to clarify my earlier comment, fitting the relay means that you won't burn out the connections on the sierra stalk.

As you've described it, the washer button is normally closed, when you push it the circuit is broken which seems slightly odd. If that is the case you need a normally closed relay, so when energised (not pressing the button because that is normally closed) the relay is open.

However it is odd that the washer button is normally closed; but I'm not familiar with the intricacies of Sierra stalks so can't comment on whether that is right.

One other thing, it would be worth wiring it onto the accessory circuit because otherwise the relay will be permanently drawing a current.

You may also get a very short hoot of the horn when switching the ignition on, as the relay opens the circuit.
