Testing a Hall Sensor
lsdweb - 7/5/08 at 08:47 PM

Hi all

I'm trying to get my R1 running but can't get a 'signal' from my cam sensor (previous thread)

It's set up as follows:
12v feed to live (blue)
Sensor earth to ECU earth (blue/black)
Signal to ECU (white/black)

cam sensor wiring
cam sensor wiring

I've tried testing it off the engine with a similar setup but I get no change in the signal voltage when I move a metallic object across the sensor. The sensor gets really hot as well!

Any thoughts?

Wyn

When I tried testing a hall sensor I failed to get any response by hand, I resorted to offering it to the spinning jaws of my lathe.

So if you have not got a lathe try a standard drill, the wifes kenwood mixer etc, anything that has a spinner and hold it close.

I do not think it should get hot.

Regards Mark

Is it definately a 12v Hall sensor? Many of them are 5v parts, which would explain the getting hot and not working. You may have a nice desk ornament there...

I also thought they're 5V, best to check with a manual or something.

off the shelf Hall sensor ICs that I have seen operate at 10 V max - having said that just looked at RS and see some will run at 30 V ... but as ^^^ said, yours may run on 5 V.

If certainly shouldn't get hot, let alone warm.

Thanks guys

I've been running it on 5 volts not 12 - sorry! In the car it runs off the 5v sensor feed from the ECU and, on the bench, I've used a mobile phone charger (5.9v roughly) so it should be within its working parameters.

The annoying thing is I've tested two sensors (spare engine) and neither seems to give me a signal - I'll have to try the spinning technique although I'm getting nothing with the sensor in the engine when it's running!

I must be doing something totally stupid!

It's possible that it has an open collector output, so try adding a pull up resistor on the output to +5v. 2k ohms or so should be fine.
