fuel supplies without a swirl pot?
rumplitter - 29/1/08 at 09:32 AM

I've seen some Z car fuel supplies without a swirl pot and just a high pressure pump, not the usual low pressure pump, swirl pot, high pressure etc.....
Anyone else done the set up I've attached?

I have my fuel setup plumbed in a similar fashion to the that but with these differences...

I don't have a foam filled tank - just one of the rare none-leaking PTM tanks (for those that recall those). I don't have pre-pump filter just a 15mm ID hose with the pump below the level of the base of the tank. I have a fairly large capacity injection filter prior to the fuel rail in case the pump self destructs and to protect the injectors. I've also plumbed the return in almost directly above the send on the tank.

I had it on the road all last year and attended a couple of track evenings, where the car wasn't spared, with no symptoms of fuel starvation.

Cheers

That setup will work fine as long as there is enough fuel in the tank to stop fuel surging away from the tank outlet when cornering/stopping/accelerating.

The point of the swirl pot is to keep a constant supply of fuel to the HP pump.

Maybe the Z cars have a built in swirl pot inside the tank?

Cheers

Have a look at the in-tank Landrover pump / swirl / sender unit which I used - works a treat.

I have a non swirl pot set up which is fine until I reach under 1/2 tank of fuel then on left handers it stutters as it's starved of fuel, on track days this in effect gives me lift off oversteer, not much fun really.

Currently planning to add swirl pot and low pressure pump in the rear end somewhere without losing my boot which I need for Ring trips and longer blats with tent etc.

this is the fuel cell that i bought from rally design, 5 gallons might not get me too far though but it'll do for now!

someone has told me that the fuel return should be at the top of the tank, does it matter that the inlet and outlet are side by side? Rescued attachment DRAG_RACE_VERTICAL.jpg

Your set-up will work fine as long as your tank provides a constant supply of fuel. I've never run a swirl pot and never had a problem, just run a collector in the base of the tank or use a tall narrow tank.

where should i put the fuel filter? before the pump or after it or both?

RazMan - 29/1/08 at 01:06 PM

I would stick it in before the pump

which high pressure fuel pump should i use?

I'm running a 1.8 Honda Vtec

The Walborough is always a keen favourite - do a search on eBay as they seem to pop up on there quite a lot.

The ideal situation is both, however, I've read the Bosch pump don't like sucking fuel at all and their lifespan is shortened...

The pump I'm using is from the scrappy of the underside of an EFI audi (not K-Jet). My injectors were considerably more expensive so that's what I'm protecting. Each to their own I guess.
