R1 engine mount thread pitch and size?

Hi all,

Just a quick one...

The three top mounts that the cradle attaches to on the engine are what thread and size?

Having a few problems finding a bolt that will fit. Is it possible to tap to M12 as a better solution as the hole size on the cradle seems to be M12?

Thanks,

Chris.

My 98 R1 has 3 mounting bolts on the head. M10 x 1.25 and M12 x 1.25 ring a bell (not the most fine nor ordinary but that unusual size in between)

My cradle came with the M12 and M10 tubes on the wrong side so I had to file the 10mm hole out to 12mm. That was a fun job.

My drill has a chuck size of 10mm. My local shop didn't do a 12mm bit with a 10mm shank. I didn't want to buy a new drill. It didn't take too long to file it out.

Still a little confused how a M12 fitted into the R1 mounts... ?

Mines a 4XV and I tried an M12 but it seemed to large a pitch...

Do people tap these threads too!?

Chris.

M12 X 1.75 is the standard pitch for M12.

Any less is called metric fine, I think my R1 threads are 1.25.

Hi all,

I have the M10x1.25 and M12x1.25 bolts I got from you zxrlocost, but all 3 mounts on the engine are M10x1.25. There are 2 on the sprocket end of the engine and 1 on the other

Sounds like the MNR cradle is a bit different to the MK one but do I not need 3 bolts anyway in addition to the threaded bar for the bottom mount?

For fellow MNR owners, only 2 of my mounts on the cradle - 1 on the sprocket end, 1 on the oppositeactually line up with mounts on the engine, is this correct?

Picture paints a thousand words, looks to me like the wrong cradle.
Sprocket End:

Thanks and rgds

Rich

Does look a little wrong!

Just mounted my engine tonight. I ended up tapping all the threads to M12 x 1.75 and used high tensile M12s. Seems perfect!

Chris.

Hi Chris,

I was also thinking about doing that as I only have 1 M10 fine bolt.

You have a 5JJ too dont you? 3 upper bolts?

Thanks

Rich

I've got the 4XV Richie.

There are three top mounts on my cradle. I'll take a picture tonight and hopefully get to update the build diary at some point too!

Hope all is going well?

Chris.

Going pretty well as Im off work for a couple of weeks.

Spoke to Chris this morning and they reckon its a 4XV cradle I have been sent.

Ill post a pic of the mounts on the engine cos they must be fairly different from 4XV to 5JJ.

Kind Rgds

Richie

Here are the 3 top engine mounts on the 5JJ, all of which are M10 fine. Do they look radically diferent to the 4XV?

Thanks Rich Rescued attachment Mount1.JPG

Hey Richie,

The mounts do look fairly similar to the 4XV from what I can see...

I don't seem to have a piccie of the other side but will look.

Maybe your cradle's from a 5PW??

Chris.

Hey bud,

Just got your U2U and thought I'd post here for others...

The two smaller M10 mounts did take an M12 x 1.75 tap but you must make sure it is going in perfectly straight as the Ally alloy is fairly soft and can easily go in lopsided...

The M12 on the other side was a lot easier as the thread pitch was the only difference, not diameter.

As for the tensile strength, I used 8.8s and cut the bolts to length so they didn't bottom out (as you say) in the exhaust port.

Lastly as for the actual figure of tensile strength and whether a looser thread pitch tapped into a tighter thread pitch of the same diameter is strong enough; the bolts only need to take force in shear and not tension so aslong as suitable torque can be obtained on tightening, then there should be no problems. You could use 10.9s or 12.9s but IMO I'm sure it's not needed.

Also, Loctite will be needed on these bolts on final positioning.

Marc may have another take on this, but most of this info is taken from him and his Dad...

Chris.

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply.

It looks as though the [side you have shown] is the same as the 5JJ. I would have been suprised if it had been to be honest.

This cradle could well be a inj 5PW then, which would make more sense as I know theyre pretty different.

Thanks again, kind rgds

Richie

The 5PW and the 5JJ are different.
I've got a 5PW and marc fitted my engine into the car to make the cradle as they don't have jigs for the 5PW.

Hopefuly that will mean I won't have this problem

I had the same problem with the bolts on my 5jj.
After a bit of a head scratch and a few “ You wont get anything like that mate ” from various places.
I finally went to my local Honda dealer and asked them if they had anything likely to fit. One of the mechanics put his hand in his toolbox and came up with three second-hand Honda engine mounting bolts exactly the right length and pitch.
I had to cut the tubes on the cradle to get it to fit.
