Air scoop disturbing air
JoaoCaldeira - 14/7/07 at 10:31 PM

Hi.

I'm having a bit of a problem with heat, and I'm trying to improve the situation.

For now I have fully tunneled the nosecone to rad, so all air in the engine bay is hot.
I'm having oil temperature issues, but I admit that engine intake is using hot air after the rad (no vent whatsoever).

I'm using a pipercross sponge filter.

What are the cons / pros of using the MNR air scoop?
a) will it lower engine bay's temperature?
b) will it raise pressure after the rad, though making it less efficient?
c) should I just add side vents in order to let the heat escape?
d) will it disturb the air leading to problems in air admission?

Thanks,
Joao

IMO you should duct the air filter intake to cold air, probably below the rad. Installing a couple of vents further back will probably improve airflow and let the heat out more efficiently.

hi Joao

if i remember correctly you are using the bike rad ???
i would swap for an ally four core proper rad, mark in cyprus had problems with a polo rad not keeping his car cool enough changed to a four core and problem solved, the oil temp is a by product of the water temp, i have also fitted naca ducts in reverse on my car as i have a fully panelled in floor and temps where really high but these cured it

best regards

marc

Having suffered similar problems I fitted a pair of Metro bonnet vents, plus a louvered vent each side of the engine bay. Worked a treat. HTH Ray

Yeap.... I'm still usign the bike rad.

Water temp sits on the 85 - 90ºc on track (25 - 30º ambient temperature), so I thought it was more of engine bay temperature.

Where did you install the NACA ducts? Any disturb on air flow through rad or into intake?

Thanks,
Joao

I have a bit of a clearence problem: the pipercroos sponge filter (30 or 40 mm (?) high) already touches the bonnet, so I thought that
a) an airbox would not fit
b) with a scoop (providing clearance, not air) I could use NF Auto air filter canister, but would it be up to the job (providing enought air)?

That's perfect for the job Joao. You can mount the filter anywhere as long as you can run ducts to the engine intake & fresh air.

If its engine bay temp you would probably need some vents near the back of the bay to get the air out. Some nice loubres in the side of the bonnet or something as chippy says.

you could always cut and flare the tub as mine has been done which also allows easier access to sides of engine .the sides are cut at the footwell and flared about 25mm

Errr.... do you have a bigger pic?

Thanks,
Joao

Joao,
I've used one of the Air filter canister, with a home made airbox.
Works well, I had it on the rollers and didn't even need a dyno jet kit, just upped the main jet size.

Hi.

Where are you taking the cold air from?
How do you prevent water from getting into it?

Cheers,
Joao

amalyos - 16/7/07 at 07:17 AM

I've cut a couple of vents in the bonnet.

To stop any water, I just don't go out in the rain. Rescued attachment Vents.JPG

Hi Marc.

Sorry to be a pain ... were you able to take a those shots?
Do you have dimensions for the MNR air scoop?
Is it more aesthetic or more functional?

Cheers,
Joao

marc n - 23/7/07 at 06:45 AM

its no worries at all we now have two car spaces back in the workshop so im unloading the two cars that are in the truck today at some point so should have some for tomorrow for you

Hi Marc.

Thanks for the photos.

How do you prevent water from entering through the nose intake?

Cheers,
Joao
