paint or powder coat roll bar ?
paint or powder coat roll bar ?
I want something thick and tough (too cover up some of my untidy fabrication and look good for a long while).
pref. satin black coloured
any ideas

Assuming its fitted to the chassis powder coat the lot, but from experience and looks the whole chassis needs to be done, ONLY after you have
completed all the fabrication/welding. If u may have a need to change something or add more welding, flash paint with primer which can be easily
rubbed back or shot blasted prior to re coating at the final finish stage.

I have fabricated my roll bar to bolt on to the chassis so taking it somewhere for shotblasting/ painting / coating etc is not an issue.
Just wondered what other people had done. Plus people say that power coat is brittle and chips easily ?

Odd to hear you say powder coat is brittle and chips.. I was under the impression it gave a plasticy coating, and is generally considered much tougher
and tolerant to chemical and environmental abuse than painting.
Please note I may be talking complete arse.

My chassis has been powder coated. Wish I hadn't bothered - it's covered in chips and scratches and is really obvious where I've
had to touch it up with paint.

I'll be painting mine.
Not sure powder coating would cover much up. Nice thick coat of paint will tho

look at my chasis !
it really does look like its been powder coated
i used zinc primer and then top coat of hamerite stone chip paint
The stone chip paint comes in very large red/yellow cans , we used black, the paint is amazing looks so good, not gloss just nice and it has like a
sort of plastically feel to it and it dries really fast the finish is soo good i prefer it to powder coating
painted the whole chassis in it !
its amazing stuff

Took a quick look
Looks good. Does it stay soft for weeks like normal hammerite. ? Also is the black more of a satin than a gloss ?

Looks really great, Rich!! 
I've been thinking of semi-gloss for the chassis myself. Put it on with a brush, no marks, no fuss, and good-looking, too.

Roll Bar was chromed by a good friend together with front wishbones and lightbar for  £90

dont forget to use Halfrods Zinc primer and not Zinc 182

Does look good, did you brush or spray it on ?
also ad states:
Tough and durable.
• Remains flexible and will not crack or peel.
• Overpaintable with most top coats.
• Colours - Black, White, Grey.
remains flexible.... how flexible ?

yeah i used spray
dont hand paint ur chassis its a joke.
plus dont use Zinc 182 use Halfrods Zinc primer spray

Hand painting is less wasteful though.
I'm thinking of going the POR15 route but to do it properly it gets really expensive.
Degreaser (disolves rust too), metal prep, POR15, topcoat primer and POR15 topcoat = about £60 and only for 1l of paint. Still it should be
indestructable once done.
Might be overkill really, just need something chip resistant that sticks really well.

Have spent 3 full days in total sanding/grinding with the tool and undercoating the chassis, needs another undercoat and topcoat now!
my advice, get it shot blasted rather than use the tool! and spray it rather then brush it, the extra money compared to the time saved it well worth
it.

If thats £60 for 1 litre, its going to be pretty expensive. I have a feeling you are going to need quite abit more than 1 litre.
