Filler

For those of you UK based folk who have made molds for their fibreglass bits, what filler did you use, and what did you use to seal the filler prior to laying up the fibreglass?

I havent made my own GRP parts, but I have made bonnet scoops before when fitting 2.3 V6's to Mk1 escorts in my youth (when RWD escorts wre 2 a penny)

I used standard body filler and polyurethane paint - apparently it is impervious to polyester resin and sort of acts as a release agent in its self. I used brush on release agent over the top and rubbed out the brush marks out of the competed scoops using 1000 wet and dry

Ian,

I made my side panels, rear panel, front and rear arches and scuttle a follows.

For the wheel arches I used 2 sheets of MDF and scribed a line that was about 1/2" bigger than the tyre radius. Then I cut a slot following line with a jigsaw.

I then slotted ally sheet into holes and using ordinary plaster of paris and a former shaped the plaster into the corners to give the curve down the sides.

Rear arches and scuttle done same way but rear arches have one "square side" (to attach to body) and scuttle used another form for the bonnet recess.

I used a layer of grease (vaseline and sunflower oil mix) that was essentially wiped off.

Side panels were ally sheet and 1"sq used as a former likewise greased and wiped off.

I used ordinary body filler.

CFS fibreglass supplies (who are in cornwall methinks) do a 3 or 4 KIL0!!! tub for a tenner. Dont waste money on Halfords little tins!

I sealed the surface by using ordinary WATER BASED wood varnish.

It is possible to use normal plaster and then paint it with a 2K sealant. plaster is great to work with as it is cheap and easy to form. best talk to your resin supplier and i am sure they will advice you which sealer to use.

After using the 2K sealer, fill in all the small imperfections with normal body filler.

i would second what mark suggested, i made a bonnet scoop cos id never used fibre glass before so thought id have a go, made me plug out of ply and filled it up with car body filler, u-poll do easy 1 and smooth seven (i prefer the smooth, its harder to sand, but that makes it easier to shape if get what i mean, hard to sand too much off) and sealed it with polyurethane moisture curing, which is used for several industrial things like boat building, repairing hulls etc. we use it at work to seal molds for cast stone. cfs sell it but it is listed as g4 sealer varnish.
