Clear Perspex Bonnet
Hi All,
I have been entertaining the thought of making a see through bonnet for show. Has anyone ever done anything like this?
ACRYLIC - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® SHEET
The main properties of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet:
* The appearance of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
* The ability of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet to transmit and reflect light
* The transparency of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
* The exceptionally long exterior life of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
* The ease of use and processing of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
* The good mechanical properties of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
* The high acoustic and electrical insulation of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
* The resistance to high temperature of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
* The Recyclability of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
* The good food contact use of Acrylic - Perspex ® / Altuglas ® sheet
Cheers,
O

Hmmm- polycarbonate vacuum forms quite nicely if I remember correctly. I've seen people make wooden tools by hand...

I did think about using it for the floor! Change plan when I thought about road-kill smeared across it!

Not so good for a bonnet as it would go floppy over the exhaust manifold.
Wonder if polycarb floor would get through SVA (can't see why not, but you might need tensile strength figures etc to prove it's strong
enough, certainly an intriguing idea

Bugger! Didn't think of that! LOL
Maybe a "show" pannel in the Ally bonet would work then?!

Most fireblade exhausts exit out of the side panel anyway.

I like the way you think Tim
This is where my exhaust will exit (same engine)
engine bay left side 929
So it may still work

I don't think it would get so hot as to go floppy but it might discolour.
Vacuum forming is easy if you have a mould. You'd need a good vacuum to pull thick enough stuff to make a bonnet though.
A polycarbonate floor. nice. What if you make the whole bodywork out of it. What coulour would you put on your V5?
Oh now look! you've made me want a clear car again!

Poly carb would be a good material s it is very resistant to penetration though very heavy strength for strength with ally or steel. If you think
polishing scratches out of ally is not fun then you will really hate trying to keep polycarbonate shiny, any dust will start scratching or sand
blasting the surface! Cool look though! Vac formes lightweight wings in poly carb would be a good idea.

Wrap the headers in "Exhaust Wrap" and then fab up a small polished (removable if you want!) sheild to direct the heat away from the
bonnet, and then with some strategically placed holes drilled to increase airflow in/out/through/over it might stay cool.
I say that in spite of the fact that mine is always as floppy as hell () when I come to a stop...

Well the proper way to show off your engine is to fit one so large that there is no hope of fitting it all under the bonnet .
At least thats how hotrodders do it here.
Seriously though, Id say the poly bonnet will be very heavy, scratch, and distort from heat. The clear floor idea is neat. Ive driven trucks with
large rust holes in the floor before..... it's interesting.
Cheers.

Here in mexico I have seen VW bugs with transparent engine covers.
I think they resist heat some, but must be a bi**h keeping them scratch free.
