Pop rivets update for floor?

hi Guys,

What pop rivets would you go for on the floor?
Mine is 2mm aliminum, 1.5mm box section and 1mm for PU sealant.
So large flange for 4.5mm grip. Looking for someone like screw fix etc?

Cheers!

like these?

^^ pretty sure these are the ones Dax supplied with my Rush kit, they do normal ones aswell as the multi-grip type I linked - they also do really good PU adhesive too (look for 'bond + seal' )
Wurth have always been really good to deal with for me, but are trade only for delivery (not that it takes much to setup an account... they just want a company name)

or these:

and ^^ these are the ones I got when I ran out.....

I used these when I repanelled my floor about 13 years ago in conjunction with the bond+seal pu, i have had no issues with them since. The original floor panels were held in with 4mm standard head rivets, they wore into the aluminium panels badly hence the repanelling.

Mcerd1's first suggestion of the Wurth rivets look ideal to me and were the same as I used to fit my Ally floor to my

MK Indy chassis. Never had any issues with mine in the the 3k miles I drove the car before I sold it. The buyer never had any issues in the 3 years he had the car either.

Hope that helps.

I would use a decent rivet rather than a hollow stem rivet. Better rivets such as Huck Magna-Lok are designed so the stem part remains in the centre of the rivet. This opposes the shear forces that make hollow stem rivets loosen up very quickly. A further advantage is that the stems are available in aluminium (Tough stuff) and are corrosion resistant. Plenty of Magna Lok rivets on e-bay - pull them with a normal pop rivet gun (sore elbow)or an air riveter.

The next rung up is a locking rivet such as Cherrymax. They have the stem locked in place. OTT for most applications.

^^ they are defiantly better than the ones I've suggested, but probably overkill when used with good PU adhesive onto a steel chassis

On mine the chassis was stripped to bare metal and both it and the alloy sheet were key'd with very course grit - so the PU is almost certainly doing all the work
(although I would never suggest using it without some kind of mechanical fastener aswell - also saves clamping it while the adhesive cures)

for corrosion protection I filled in the centre of each rivet with a little extra PU too

The only problem with the type of rivet shown is that the rivet pin left in the rivet can fall out leaving a hole through the floor
I would go for the sealed back rivet all type should be available at any local nut and bolt supplier.

Hope that helps.

^^^ they don't quote the grip length though (I looked at those ones too)
I've always found screwfix a bit useless for most types of fastener - they give very poor info / specs on the products

the pic doesn't look like a multi-grip type either as they seem to be smooth (the multi-grip ones from most makes have a slightly crimped bit in the middle) - so they probably only have a couple of mm grip range too....

the AVDEL Avex ones I linked are a multi-grip type (its the exact same ones I got) - loads of info available:

These ones correct?

Thats the the ones I got (page 79 of the Avdel catalogue lists dimensions and grips in detail) - these are the Avex 1641 series

Large Flange 4.8x18.7mm - these have a 16.2mm flange, want a 4.9-5.0mm hole and can grip between 4.8 and 11.1mm

or the other length options are:
13.9mm (grip 1.6 to 6.3mm)
17.0mm (grip 3.2 to 9.3mm)
20.2mm (grip 6.4 to 12.7mm)
28.2mm (grip 12.7 to 19.8mm)

Wurth are a really handy shop for car building - but I guess they don't have one near you
(you don't need a trade account if your in the shop)

Looks like the larger flange options are only a 14mm flange (rather than 16mm on the Avex) and the grip ranges are just 1.6mm each (rather than ~6mm on the multi-grip ones)

nothing wrong with that, but you'd need to be more careful about picking the right length for the thickness your going through and you may need more sizes of rivet.

Also while the 14mm flanges are no doubt fine for the alloy sheets, 16mm ones would be better if you also want to use them on any GRP panels too (and the multi-grip is also good for GRP panels tat might vary a bit more than alloy sheets)

(BTW it looks like the ones RS sell are 'POP' branded, which are part of 'Stanley Black & Decker' who also have Avdel.... )

Hi,

Found these. Looks like I need the 13mm ones as I need 4.5mm material??? These would do 1.6 - 6.3mm?

looks like the same thing to me

as for grip length the 13mm ones should still give you a little room to play with (6.3 - 2.0 -1.5 = 2.8mm for sealant / tolerance)

the 17mm long ones (3.2-9.3mm grip) would give you a bit more to play with (if you can find a decent seller with them ofcourse... they seam to be harder to find )
