Aluminum Recomendations
hi guys,
Well back in the garage after a long time out, due to whats going on and having to work from home.
I am now at the point to make some aluminum panels etc and would like your advise.
So below is the panels I am going to make and like your advice on each. The car is a Haynes Roadster.
Center transmission tunnel cover.
Rear bulkhead between passenger compartment and diff area etc.
Main floor. Passenger and drivers floors.
Passenger lower bulkhead (opposite to where drivers pedal box is.

I would use your 14G aluminium for all the panels you mention

search for 1050 half hard.
Numbers beginning with 1 are pure (ish) aluminium.
As its rolled into sheet it work hardens and "half hard" is, er, not too soft and still able to be bent and shaped.

Have a look on Car builder solutions if your stuck, they don't do 8 x 4 sheets but smaller pieces can be bought and delivered if necessary
The catalogue page number is 405 and you might even find the type you want and a different code that might be useful for it.

Hi
Try searching for 5251H22
Normally 1.5mm (the 14G mentioned above is the Imperial 'Gauge' thickness - roughly 1.6mm) is used with some people using 2.0mm for the
floor.
I use Aluminiumwarehouse myself as you can get big sheets and/or cut to size, NTDWM other than a happy customer.

I was thinking the 1.5 for all the parts apart from the floor. Floor 2.0mm??

Sounds good.
The 5251 is magnesium alloy and you would find that knocking edges over a little difficult.
Edit to add:-
1/16th" = 16 gauge = 1.6mm

I seem to recall doing the sides in 0.9mm 1050 ( very easy to form ) This got couple of small dents in the passenger foot well where people feets have
hit it from the inside. was a bit too soft and a bit too thin. Doing it again id use 0.9 or 1.2mm probably 5251
I think I did the back panel, seat back and tunnel in 0.9 5251 or something similar (formable but fairly stiff). That worked well.
The floor was 1.6mm 6082 I think. Also fine.

I`ve used Aluminium Warehouse website too. Sheets come delivered sandwiched between 2 thin sheets of wood to protect them.

I used 1.2 for all my panels including the floor! I've not had any problems in the 13 years it's been on the road.
I haven't had any issues with the floor either, and anyone who knows me will tell you I'm not a lightweight!
