Cycle Wing Stays
Last week one of the arms on my passenger side cycle wing bracket snapped, I temporarily bodged it back together and then on Saturday the other side
of that bracket also snapped!
The brackets have always been quite springy so I always suspect they'd go.
I have cortina uprights and KitSpares sell some of these:

Do most people make their own, or buy off the shelf? If the latter does anyone have any experience of how solid the Kit Spares ones are?

AFAIR - about half Kg each. Other examples have proved to be too flimsy, according to various reports on here.

I had this type and they failed several times, they broke at the welded joint between the flat piece and the rod at the bottom.
In the end I cut off the flat sections and remade them out of 16swg wall thickness steel tube that was a good fit over the rod section. The section of
the tube was crushed flat where it attaches to the wing and a local machine shop formed them and welded them to the rods after I had jigged them in
the correct position. I will put a couple of pictures shortly.

and the wing wobble a fair bit anyway. I want something that makes it solid, but hopefully won't require future maintenance as I don't
have a welder so can't easily fix things like this.

Pretty much where mine broke. There are a couple of drgs in the photo archive of the new tubular pieces, in 2 pieces as the drg was to big for our A4
scanner; and a few photos of the finished stays fitted. Very sturdy and no sign of breakage after 2 years of use.

I just keep welding mine up when they break - tried lots of different configurations but it's a constant problem
Was thinking of something like " target="_blank">this
which I saw on an Italian 50's Osca.
Might be a bit over-engineered though?

and still in one piece.

I need just get mine taken off first; annoyingly my brake lines join on an additional bracket on the wing stay so I need to chop that bit off first

They still break at the flat section though,tubular is the way to go. You know it makes sense

Strange! Wonder why the flexy doesn't go straight to the caliper?

'Cos the IVA tester didn't like what happened to my original armoured flexis. On my car, there was a foul condition at full lock, and
potential problems with fitting a longer flexi hose. Simplest soluion was to fit the original Cortina bracket, and a bridge pipe from sais brkt to the
caliper. IVA man happy - result!

they really should get thicker as they get closer to the upright or at least have a stiffener (or haunch) to give the same effect
also any bends / flattening of tubes should be done hot (or at least heated afterwards) to relieve any residual stresses caused by shaping it
(residual stress + vibration + cantilever design = )
I quite like my dax ones (not 100% convinced by the weld on the wends but they don't seem to break very often on other folks cars....)
(obviously they are for a sierra upright, but you get the idea with the big/long stiffeners)

Yep! I had the same problem, eventually got Mr Bost to make up some flexies with 45degree ends, that worked
