Mounting a spare wheel
Off on a road trip to Southern France.
I really don't want to be stuck somewhere with a can of tyre squish so want to mount a proper Sierra wheel and tyre on the back of the car.
Could any post pics of theirs or let me know how they did this?
My current plan is a horizontal 25mm chassis rail bolted inside the boot (to the boot verticals). Then weld a large nut to that.
The wheel can be held against the back panel using a large, long bolt through a wheel nut hole.
I'll then attach the number plate to this or below it maybe.
This seems a simple way. But I know some of you have a hoop mechanism behind the car that might look better than my idea.
So any pics of what you've done would be great!

If i get time tomorrow eve, i will take some photos of my spare wheel mount.
I got Luego to weld two bits of 1" box under where the fuel tank mounts are, they then made me a large U shaped bracket thatb slides into the
two bits of box section, this supports the bottom of the spare wheel & it has a plate welded to hold on the number plate & light.
I will then put a brace behind the back panel to bolt through the spare wheel centre hole.
You can just see the box section in this photo, ive highlighted it in white.

Hi James,
I have a horizontal chassis rail welded in with threaded M8 tubes welded into this.
Bolted to this through the ally panel is a "top hat" shape.
In the top of the top hat are two wheel studs.
The wheel slips onto the studs and wheel nuts hold it on.
The tyre sits about 6mm away from the ally back panel.

Westies use this affair, pushes into two pinch clamps that are mounted the rear rear most chassis rail behing the fuel tank.
Then to stop it moving bolts are used through the wheel nut holes, as mentioned by the OP.

Mine is basically the same as that Westfield jobbie, just that mine mounts under the back panel.

Hi James, may be more work than you want to do, but this is how I set mine up. (Now removed though as afected the handling too much)

Some great ideas and set ups there - I suppose Chippy's is nearest to what I had in mind-cradle underneath, and a mounting plate between the
upright rails.
Not at all convinced about Marcus's set up - can't see me flinging the car around with that on the back - it would handle like a
counterbalance forklift!!!

It did!!! But it served its purpose and stayed together for the French trip, this pic is taken at the eurotunnel port
