is this nuts

Morning all

Over the past two days I've obviously been exposed to fumes or something as some of the ideas I've been having a plain mad. Some of you may of seen my post on bearings yesterday which was posted without a clue what I'm talking about

Well the bearing is for an idea I've been toying with for side screens on my car. i have no windscreen to mount hinges and fancied something different so though why not reverse scissor door type side screens pivoting around the area of the base of the roll bar.

I've been messing around with drawings in CAD and on paper and see no reason why it wouldn't work.

So anyone got any views postiver or negative for the idea?

Cheers
Nigel

the only thing i can think of is where your head will be when you get in and out. lambo doors tip forward, so you legs need to come out under them, the area above and around your head is clear. if it pivots from the back, it might get in the way a little, although i suppose the technique for getting in and out your car will be different from lambos.
i like it! might be an idea to post your drawings up so people can understand a bit easier. took me a while to work out what you wer eon about

Surely, if you have no windscreen then you have no air buffeting around it for
sidescreens to block ?

You'd just have a couple of airplane type tail fins on the side. Might help straight line
stability though

this is what I mean, I've even come up with a self opening system that is so simple even I can understand it.

oh yeah, there is that... if you have no windscreen, side screens are a bit pointless... and with nothing for them to attach to at the front, they might be a bit wobbly, flapping about in the wind til you get slapped round the face, or they break and fly off?

Plus, if they decide to hinge back whilst on the move then you'll have a damn good set of airbrakes!

My side screens were hinged on the scuttle. They kept the air (and road splashes) of my elbow and helped keep some of the heat from the heater in the car. It was nice and cosy with them fitted.

I love your car.

I also love the self opening part. Doesn't work in reverse, I see, but you'll find a solution to that!

I've worked out a way to keep the side screen shut when driving and also to keep the screen from buffeting around from side to side.

I should of stated that even though no winscreen there is a small wind deflector.

So is this worth looking into further or just a waste of time

my gut feeling is the latter; I am not sure how effective they will be without a full screen plus whether thewy will get ripped off.

may look a bit weird too.

You must live in a very posh/remote place to be able to wheel your toolbox out and leave it there! And not get nicked for having a dodgy plate on the vw

eh?! why's everything in backwards?
if you can find a way to tuck the side screensinside the wind deflector, then it will help a lot i think

I see a few problems (in addition to the above),

1) Make sure the things not to high when opened to stop you getting out in a garage etc..

2) You vision might be obscured by the sidescreen surround.. (solid ploycarbnate would get around this as you could do it without the surround).

3) Would need to re-make if wanted weather gear.

But it's good to be different (and that's part of the fund of these cars!)....

Speeling as good as never..

Humbug I think made some similar hinged half doors for a half screen.. He has changed them for a full screen and side screens might be work asking why..

Strikes me as a little like fitting a double glazed door to a tent. I suppose you can, but why?

no real reason for coming up with the idea apart from

1. I thought it might reduce buffeting that is coming round the aeroscreen at about 60mph
2. Can't hinge off a full windscreen as per normal
3. thought it might be a bit different and give me something to build/keep me out of trouble.

thanks for all the feed back and comment on both for and against points, it's appreciated
