Need a rubber boot grommet thingumyjig
StevieB - 3/8/08 at 09:40 AM

I'm looking for a grommet to go on my scuttle panel where the paddleshift rod goes though.

Because the rod doesn't stay in the same place through it's operation, the hole needs to be a lot bigger than the rod.

I'm looking for soemthing to act as a grommet and also allow enough movement - thought something like a small CV boot would be perfect. Does anyone know of such a thing?

A quick diagram of what I mean for the purposes of clarity: Rescued attachment gear linkage gaiter grommet thingy.jpg

Maplins do a big grommet with a 25mm diameter hole...

Otherwise in the past I've got a big hole sealing grommet and cut a hole in the middle

What's the OD of the shaft? Those universal fit CV boots can cut down to almost any size to fit.

Steering rack boot? That should extend and shorten with the rod then?

It's somewhere in the region of 15mm or thereabouts. Quite small, otherwise I'd just use a CV boot.

Maybe a rubber gear lever gaiter might be a more suitable size.

Erm...

Yeah, I guess it would be - well spotted!

Most cars have a big-arse grommet where the main wiring loom goes through the bulkhead behind the fusebox into the engine bay, something like a 2" hole in the bulkhead to pass all the connectors through and only a 3/4" hole in the grommet itself for the wires.

Go scrappy hunting, I know mk2 golfs have at least one at the top of the engine bay, and a couple further down behind the brake servo.

Gear lever rubber gaitor?

Premier wiring supply something along those lines with their looms.
