diy powdercoating
rpm - 31/12/07 at 01:07 PM

Hi all, I bought a diy powdercoating kit from electrostaticmagic whilst at the exeter kit show, and had the first go at it last week. all in all i'm very pleased with the results, it's easy to apply and gives a good finish, trouble is i'm now looking for bits to take off and powdercoat!. theres some pics in my archive edit, it's the top and bottom arms i did

Looks nice! Do you have to bake it afterwards like normal powdercoating?

yes you have to bake it at 180 degrees for about 20mins, an old oven would do but to get the size i needed for the arms i stripped out an old washing machine and used the carcass surrounded in insulation with an infrared lamp in the side as a heat source, it worked fine and cost nothing!

you can just use a heat gun it works fine.

what lamp did you use? any pics of the oven? i bought a kit from them mid year and aint even used it yet!!

When i spoke to them they reconned a 3kW lamp would be best but a 1.3kW lamp would do the job eventually. 3kW IR heaters arent cheap so my plan is to get a couple of 2kW ones off ebay. I will also use them for keeping me warm in the garage too.

Should get one of these for under £30 anyway (so long as we dont all buy at once!!)

IR heater 2kW

Could you give me more information about using a heat gun. Can it be used for fairly large objects,e.g.wishbones?
