Ali bonnet

Finally got around to making a new bonnet to replace the f/g one with the huge bulge (oo-err, missus!). First off I raised the nose by packing it out with 1.5" x 1.5" ali channel.

I followed the ratchet method, as you can see from the pic.

Question: does the bonnet "set" itself into the curved shape? I ratcheted it down, then took it off to look and it bounced to about halfway back to flat. Or should I take it off and overbend it so it stays with the shape of the scuttle?

btw, I measured twice and cut once... just happens I measured wrongly twice - that's why the front only just comes down to the side rail. I think I will be OK with a graduated foldover, and I have a cunning plan to put some tongues on the inside of the leading edge of the bonnet that will slot into the ali channel filler pieces.

I had to cut a hole for the remaining part of the engine that still sticks up - I did look at raising the scuttle with the U-channel as well, but it would still not quite have covered the engine without need fror a bulge, and would have been more of a hassle to move dashboard, etc.

Now I just need to make up a small scoop/bulge - probably ali with mesh - or could buy an ABS or F/g one I suppose and maybe paint it blue to match the rest of the f/g? Rescued attachment 2006-05-20 9 ST bonnet strapped in place.JPG

When I made the original bonnet I curved it over my welding bottle by over bending it til it sprung back to the required shape.

When I made another bonnet last year, I no longer had the large welding bottle so went out and found a deserted telegraph pole and over bent it round that!!

I tried the ratchet strap thing but there was too much spring in the ally.
