Front mudguard stays
GaryM - 2/3/06 at 01:47 PM

Has anyone tried fabricating front mudguard stays without using sheet steel at the tops on the stays (i.e. the section that bends under the fibreglass mudguard) and instead extending the tube up under the mudguard.

I realise in may result in the mudguard sitting higher but the design should be stronger and less likely to fail?

Something like this...

I'd then weld some steel strip to the very top to use to fasten (bond or bolt) to the fibreglass.

Comments please.

Thanks
Gary

Gary
After several embarassing breakages with the book design, I switched to 13 mm square RHS welded to 4 mm x 25mm strip with a good overlap and a fillet weld on both sides. No further problems. The latest build has clamshells - brackets made out of 15mm RHS with no welds - quite tricky to bend, but should be ok, I think.

I think Robin Hood do them in a stronger form on the Lightwieght, "DIYER" has got one and we were talking about them today.

I had constant problems with my book-style stays. After one snapped, I made a couple using bent 1/2" rod. I have the fenders skimming the tyres and there's been no problem at all with interference. They hold the fenders much more solidly than before.

I had heard that the stays kept breaking so I did away with them, 4000 miles and no problems Rescued attachment ModCycleWings.jpg
