After a recent thread on the Sylva-chat group on Gmail, a comment was made
about reinforcing the screen surround on the fury body tub.

The suggestion was to use steel tubing and glass it into the framework.

Anyone have any experience of this and if so, any pictures.
Also, how much of the excess fibre glass can be trimmed from the frame?

I trimmed mine back to about 2/3rd of what you have there on the side but radiused it out to the full width at the bottom I trimmed the top bit so the last ridge was wide enough to take some large edge trim. I used a boot edge seal as that forms a gutter to run rain away to the sides instead of it coming over the top.

Beware of reinforcing the frame untill you have the 'screen in. The top will have sagged without the screen in. A few props in it are a good idea untill the screen goes in.

I have done this but only on the upright not on the top but it would work equally well. I actually used a pre-bent tube and welded a plate to it and attached it to the chassis. I'll try to sort out the pics. I intend to glass the top in also with some kind of stiffener.

As said above you need to do it with the glass in as you need the right shape to start with. I fitted the first screen myself and had loads of props of wood and plastic woodworking clamps pushing the screen into the right place. If you do the screen yourself then makesure there are small spacer between the glass and the fibreglass else cutting it out to fit anew one is very difficult as the wire doesn't fit too well.

on my car I have converted it from a doored car (filled them in to make it a spyder) and have used the hinge support bracket and bolted the A-pillar support bar to that as below

I intend to stiffen the top of the screen also but am not going to use steel for that . I will probably use glass laid over paper rope as this will be easy to apply/shape but should give adequate stiffness.

I used pipes to fill the surround, right down to the bottom of the body. then glassed in with hairy-bodge around the screen, and glass mat to the bottom of the tub.

I decided to do this when a friend climbed in and steadied themselves on the windscreen - my work is by no means structural but at least it means there's a little support when someone who doesn't know how to climb into a proper car (despite being told leans on the windscreen - I don't want an accident to mean I go aero.
