Show me your Bonnet scoops
kj - 9/9/09 at 03:34 PM

As the title goes, i will need to fit a small one where my air filter used to be, was thinking of filling the hole but don't want it to crack, and then fit the one at the front of the bonnet line like the Mach#1.

Its a ali bonnet.

And a close up....

Humbug - 9/9/09 at 04:52 PM

Why would filling in an ali bonnet crack?

Pics below show:

a) small scoop

b) patch where the old manifold used to go over the side rail

Both not too difficult to do and look fairly neat (IMHO ) Rescued attachment bonnet.JPG

Whats the verdict with these scoops,,obviously catches the cold air and drives it in at speed, my filter stick's out the bonnet about 4" just to get the carb's to work properly. Would i benefit?

kj - 10/9/09 at 06:44 AM

iiyama, can't see the pics, i know ali won't crack its just if i put a glass fibre scoop over i don't want cracks, if it does not cover the hole from my old K&N it was a pinto so on the lhs.

kj - 10/9/09 at 06:45 AM

Yep Humbug, yours looks simple and efective, i think i may have some ali left.

I just need mine to clear the VVC solenoid. £4 off ebay.

When I said large, I meant it.

Got to cover an Integrale Turbo lump, which is quite tall.
Have made a bulge as attached, but not happy with it

Want to cut the old bump out & bolt on a carbon one that's a decent shape.

Hello MattD, some time ago I posted a series of threads covering among other things the making of bonnet bulges and scoops in aluminium using just hand tools. It is easy to do and you can make the exact shape you need for the job. The thread can be found in the Tools and Techniques section. here is the link:

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/37/viewthread.php?tid=145585

I'll be happy to answer any queries you may have. Please feel free to drop me a U2U.

Cheers for the reply - will take a look.
It's the surface finish in Ali that I'd be worried about !

Is that the carbon mods one ?? Don't think it's big enough for what I need.
In particular it's height I'm looking for.

Cheers

No this is a black GRP one, same size as the carbon mods one. GKD sell them

I've a carbon mods one i'm going to sell when I get round to it though....

It gives me about 2 inch to clear the linkage on my throttle bodies.

With a bit of time and a bit of care not only can all the forming marks be removed but you can end up with a very nice polished finish.

Just a quick question.

Whats the best way of fixing to bonnet, mine is grp scoop and bonnet, silkaflex, bolt, or bond it on?

Dont want it ripping off at speed.

Andy

If I were fitting an aluminium one to a fibreglass bonnet, I'd make it with a flange, insert it from the underside of the bonnet and bond it with panel adhesive. I wouldn't use countersunk rivets because even filled you will see where they are.

picts of the engine please is it a twin cam or 8valve? 1600 or 2000

Some years ago I built a Sylva Phoenix into which I fitted a Cosworth YB engine. A large bonnet bulge was needed to accommodate the height of the engine and I made this in aluminium. I hope pictures follow. John

Old Pic... has moved on a bit since then...
Its a twin cam 16V 2Ltr from a Thema, soon to be on Emerald electronics.
Was previously fitted to a Fisher Fury, & needed the pedal box narrowing to fit into my Stylus.
