Anyone made a rollbar mounted tyre rack?
hobbsy - 19/8/09 at 05:19 PM

I did a quick search and didn't get any hits but i'm sure that i've seen some before.

Just looking for some tips / photos / ideas of materials and construction methods used.

It's for my Fury and hoping to carry a set of 4 13inch wheels so i can give my tyres death past the legal markers then change over and drive home.

I've not even got a tape measure out yet, just sat bored in an airport passing the time on free wifi...

I spotted this at Cadwell once. Had one wheel on the passenger seat and these three tied to the boot.

Hehe. That wasn't exactly what I was thinking. I need to check but from memory i think there should be enough width to get 4x 6inch wide say 185width tyres on there without overhanging...?

Not an answer to your question, but several years ago at Donington park I saw Chris Rea racing his Ferrari, he drove in with 4 racing tyres on his roof rack, fitted them, raced, then put the road wheels back on and drove home.

Well if you have a full cage fitted, it's worth getting something like this for your tyres.

You could do this, I've had 4 wheels on it

You will need a tow bar though. Also I brought a type 9 home on the rack from Manchester

I can get two 185 tyres into my passenger seat...

But no, i would be insterested to see photos or racks too, although im not likely to be carrying tyres without towing the car it would be nice to have some more space if i ever go camping in it.

Im also looking to sort a method of sticking two mountain bikes on it asap.

Why not just fit a tow bar?

^^^ that's the kind of thing I was thinking but as my roll bar stays go forwards rather than backwards I can have the tyres much lower and closer to the bar.

I've just measured up the width of 4x 185 width tyres as 750mm (no great surprise there!) and diam as approx 550mm (60 profile on a 13" rim).

If I can get them as close and as low to the bodywork and roll bar then I'm only looking at an approx 100mm rear protrusion and the same (or a little bit more) above the roll bar.

So it won't look too much like the "roof box 7" pictured further up.

Just need to find out where to source those sorts of polypropylene clamps and draw something up...
