Well mine have broken again!

sent them back to mnr today for repair. just hope i get them back in time, as i'm taking the car to Goodwood on friday.

i'll drive it without them if i have to

p*** off isn't the word

Those are different to my wing stays but I had to replace both of mine. It is not an uncommon problem.

i've just changed to that style as my last style broke off too.
Don't tell me these vibrate and break also?
Silkaflexed the wings onto the stays and my first drive out since changed was ok.
great chassis, why is it that no other make has this trouble or am i being shortsighted?

graememk, na not hitting anything i think it's vibration that's doing it.

Smart51 they are a redesign to stop this happening! (they also broke on my last car)

I had a very similar problem on my MNR wing stays.
We welded on some small vertical sections, on you picture, roughly from wher the bolt is up to the top of the tube.
It was some careful filing to follow the contours of the tube etc.

However once welded on the problem has never re-occured

is it that weld that has gone?
is brazing them any better?
i put 4 rubber washers on (1 either side of each bolt) to help stop vibration

It's not just MNR, lots do it.

Do a search

I think a 3rd stay to the top of the arch would
help though as there is quite a distance
between the two (almost 180 degs)

MK sports cars did mine like this on a raceleda upright,still going strong after 2 years,simple but strong.

That's a shame as I thought the MNR was one of the better designs. All the other manufacturers break too!

It's interesting that their's break at this point, whilst the types like the MK above break where the 3mm plate is welded.

What do Caterham do?

After one of mine broke on the way to Newlands a few years back.....

I did a redesign.......and with DLT's mega help, no welding..... mine have not broken since.......

Going back to the original picture though,the break is so straight and clean across 2/3 of it,I would put it down to lack of weld penetration,so he may just have been having a bad day welding that one up,so it may be a one off. Rescued attachment wingstay1.jpg

Paul, the other fixing on the bolt you can't see had sheered off completly.

here's a pic of other side you can see where it has split

edited to say, 3 of the 4 fixings have split where the bolt is attached.

maybe thicker material is needed.

Oh dear,doe's not look like a one off then,that looks a real weak point,still think his welding penetration was rubbish though

I tend to agree that the welding isn't good enough on that and the other hasn't got enough meat around the bolt area.

It looks to me as if the tube is to rigid and the brackets to thin with a sharp angle at the end of the welds as a stress raiser.
I made mine from some tube about 15mm dia and used 3mm x 25 strip for the wing attachment with the joint between the strip and tube doubled up with a tapered section .They do flex but along the whole length rather than just at the joints between tube and plate.
The car has now been on the road for 5 years with no problems with them so far, although I may be tempting fate by saying so.

Weld there is the flex point and being hard will fracture with the vibration. Nowt to do with penetration.

Mine are totally different to them being for Sierra uprights. IMO the mounting points were just too flimsy. Both of mine broke.

Some thicker plate and filleting have seen them OK for 2000 miles now.

I agree the mounting plates are too thin and too soft material. This needs to be thicker and welded on the inside of the bracket to the tube and not just to the outside as they are supplied.

Hi

The trouble is that the most of these designs have too many welds are to big and heavy and have no where for vibration / flex to take place. Remember there is somthing like 40KG of lift being exerted on a wing when at high speed.

Doesn’t sound good, I’m not even on the road yet and it already looks like I may have problems in the future. I thought MNR had resolved the breakage issue with this new design…
