avi files

I tried a search but struggling for the right answer.
I recently bought one of these external hard drive / media players which plugs straight into the tv to take stuff on holiday with us, i've sorted the music side but i want to put some of the kids dvd's on. I apparently need to rip them to avi files to get good quality / size.
is there an easy, reliable, free piece of software for doing this?

I've had a program called DVD2AVI recommended but cannot vouch for it myself. Google for that exact phrase. The site recommended was the one starting arbor.ee. - but there are plenty of other sites referring to it - the doom one has some guidance on use. No guarantees unfortunately.
