that won't work as the clamp is shorting out to the other temrinal, surely?

I'd imagine it gets very hot (having shorted out a gel battery accidentally). Probably enough to get the clamp to go red.

You can arc weld very sucessfully with 4 car batteries in series and a set of leads!
