Just got a summons for jury service Anybody got any tips for what to expect or how I can claim back what I will lose from work instead of £30 a day!!!!!

its great fun if you get a good case! I got people traffiking They give you forms to fill in about earnings, but expect to lose some money.

Did it about 3 years ago. what a waste of time! Got another summons a few weeks ago so arranged things at work and then got a phone call saying they wanted me in on a different date. After complaining I got excused. As your summons is not sent recorded delivery they have no proof that you received it? If I get another I will ignore it.

I did it about 2 years ago. Was very weird.

You arrive at court each day, and sit in a masssssiivvvveee waiting room with about 150 other people, that is a bit like an airport lounge, or hospital waiting area. There was a TV, papers and a cafe / canteen.

You then sit there waiting for a flight that you don't know if you have a ticket for, or a doctors appointment where you don't know if you are ill or not.

Each day the clerk comes in and calls out 15 names for each new case. The 15 of you go down to the court, get introduced to the judge, defendants etc. Then they randomly pick 12 of the 15 to sit on the jury. If you are 1 of the 3 rejects, you go back into the waiting room, ready for the next new case.

When I was there I got picked for 1 case, and that was pretty interesting. After we'd jury'd that one, I spent a couple of days in the waiting room, before getting onto a second case. After that case had ended, I had another couple of days in the waiting room. Then I was one of the 15 picked for a firearms case, where the defendant already had a history of attempting to intimidate witnesses and the jury! Luckily I was one of the 3 rejects! Finally there were no more new cases booked that week and I got to go home early.

Take a book, papers and a PSP or DS lite. I took my laptop so I could watch DVD's.

Usually it is 2 weeks but if you get a long case it can be longer. Mostly it is lots waiting. I hated it. The max payment is all you can get. my employer made up the difference, thankfully.

I am fairly certain you are obligated to going, unless they deem you unsuitable, or you have a good excuse. Contempt of court or something otherwise.

30 quid for the day how are you expected to pay the bills at the end of the month if they are taking money away from you surely they have to subsidise (spelling?) and match your daily wage???

I did it a few years ago - my employer's wrote to them to try and get me out of it but they took no notice
I got picked for a murder case - after we found him guilty there was a riot outside the court
After a police escort away from the court (via a back entrance) I had a letter excluding me from ever being called up again

Hehehe sounds great! basically if you are there for up to 11 days you get 30.64 a day, it goes up and up until the 201st and onwards days are like £250 a day!!!

It says 2 weeks usually, I hope i don't overun as im due to go to Laon at the end of May!!

I did it a couple of years ago. Easily the most dull fortnight of my life. I turned up for the first few days and was then told to ring up the night before and see if I was needed. Ended up reading the WHOLE of Lord of The Rings! I never even saw the inside of a court either.
As for wages, either your company claims them back from the court services, or you put a form in and they pay you direct.

Last time one of those came through the post I just chucked it in the bin and did nothing about it.

No further letters sent or anything, I figured they just send piles of them out and would only bother with those who respond rather than waste time chasing those who don't up. I'm to busy to waste my time on such things.

Don't care for the democratic legal system that you take for granted then? When you are arrested for speeding, only it really wasn't you, but someone else, and they take you in, you'll wish you had some decent people to hear your side of the story won't you?

You must prefer the French system where you are basically guilty until proven otherwise.

Before anybody thinks I'm a softie, there was a gang of juveniles who decided they didn't like the police, so they destroyed every car and shop window in their path yesterday in Montreal. If you can find a connection between the police and some Sunday shopper, you're pretty smart, cause I for one, don't see it! Each one of the little sh***s should be punched out til he screams "uncle!". But he will be entitled to a trial of course.
