writing DVDs
I want to write a DVD - I have a DVD writer but the file size is over 6GB. I see I can get double density DVD disks but can I use my usual DVD writer
or do I need to get a new one?
If so any recommendations?

what dvd writer do you have?
right click, properties on the icon in my computer should identify it

most DVD writers made in the last few years can handle dual-layer discs
as above right click on the DVD drive icon in my computer - properties - hardware
or right click on my computer, manage, device manager, DVD/CD-ROM devices
like this:

Ok I have a SONY DVD RW AW-G170A
And on another machine - TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653B

some googling of the spec on that sony one says it can write dual layer DVD-R 's

The Sony burns dual layer DVD+R
the tsstcorp burns both dual layer + and - disks
get some dual layer dvd+R and you can burn on either

Dont forget that when it asks to install a second disc it really means to take it out and turn it over. 
Sorry about my spelling, im an engineer and only work in numbers.

That's for a double sided DVD. A dual layer DVD reads both layers from the same side so no disc flipping needed.

Why not use DVDShrink and standard 4.7g disks?
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation
