CPU Upgrade
RPS - 28/12/05 at 11:18 AM

Hi All,

I need a little advice on CPU upgrading if anyone can help or point me to a website that can help.

I am looking to upgrade my 1.1 Ghz Socket 478 for a 2+ Ghz. My questions are:

1. Do I need to match the 400 MHz specification given in the motherboard handbook?

2. Is the process of changing the processor easy enough and should I buy a heat sink and fan as well to make it easier?

3. Is there anything else I need to consider?

If anyone can help, many thanks.

Hi there, could you list the make and model number of your current motherboard.

Also you may be interested in this little offer

Hi,

The Motherboard is a P4 Titan GA-8ILMT4 (Intel 845GL chipset).

Looks a tempting offer, but I rather not change the whole lot at the moment if I don't have to.

Thanks,

RPS

Well, here is a list of CPUs your board should support according to Gigabyte themselfs

EDIT:
Oh and as for heatsinks and fans if you buy the CPU retail packs they should come with a new one for that CPU.

Unless you can get one alot cheaper, celerons have less preformance than a p4 due to lower internal cache!

My old 1.6ghz 400fsb p4 used to run rings around my cousins 2.4ghz 400fsb celeron even when i overclocked the celeron to 2.8ghz

iirc the 478pin celeron only has a 128kb cache

You can also get alot more preformance be getting a chip thats ment for a laptop. Usually have lower clock speed to save battery but a massive cache!

This one would be good, has a 512kb cache

Are you 100000% sure its a P4 motherboard?

Intel never made a 1.1GHz P4 (not according to my memory, or their website) but they did do that in a Celeron and P3, socket 370.

May be worth checking the POST screen to be certain of the motherboard before buying anything.

The Pentium-M series are not to be confused with P4's. Intel never made a P4 1.1GHz, they do however do a Pentium-M 1.1GHz and yes, its a socket 479, so certainly not the one being used here (unless the motherboard isn't the one listed above).

Again, I'd suggest being 100% sure of the motherboard which is currently being used. Possibly the board is badly configured and running a faster CPU at only 1.1GHz, but I'd think it's more likely that the board/CPU isn't what you think it is (well we know its not a 1.1GHz CPU for a start).

I have just checked and the CPU is a 1.1, but it is a AMD Duron. Does this makes sense?

Thanks for all the help.

That makes a lot more sense!

It does however mean the motherboard model you indicated, isn't correct.

Thanks Guys, you saved me a lot of money. I took the cover off the PC and the actual Motherboard is different to the MB handbook I was given with the computer. Funny thing is, I used the wrong model number to get the RAM memory when I upgraded that and it worked just fine!

Thanks,
