can any of you whiz kids tell me how to get a digital photo onto an avatar

Post/upload (200w x 150h - pixels not inches!!! ) your digi-pic into your archive

Locate the picture in your archive and right click on it to find properties and URL

Copy the URL into the controlpanel/avatar address... if you've done it right your avatar should appear!

The avatar's are in jpg or gif format.

that picture of a busa in your archive is too big to come up as an avatar. you would need to edit it (paint will do) down to a smaller size! your half way there though, having a piccy in the archive

then follow the instructions and you should get it on there
