It will have been a DNS server issue at your ISP.
DNS server keep what is roughly equivalent to the Internet phone book, they convert Internet address in the human friendly http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk form to an numeric ip address 834.20.xxx.xxx.

ISP DNS servers are updated every few hours from other DNS servers around cyberspace and every now and the updates get corupted either by accident or deliberate "DNS Poisioning" by hackers.

The good news is your PC can use more than one DNS server, normally it will be setup to use two DNS servers belonging to your ISP but can ad others even ones belonging to other ISPs,

If you have a PC with a bit of spae memory a lot of DNS problems can be avoided by running a DNS server in the background on your own desktop/laptop PC --- the free software to do this is called "Trewalk DNS" and it is dead simple to install. This is particularly handy for anyone using adhoc wifi connections on a laptop.

You with Virgin by chance? I'm getting DNS errors and loss of internet roundabout once a week for the last 3 or 4 weeks so far.
Anyway, you're sorted if you've still got LCB. What else do you need?

All working this morning, I am with BT - a strange blip in normally good service

Peteff - 28/6/09 at 09:53 AM

I have a similar problem with the Pistonheads site, I try to connect and all I get is about:blank in the address bar.

When I was with BT used to get a lot DNS problems to the extent I gave up and used Pipex DNS servers as my main pair and a BT server as 3rd choice DNS server -- but that was a long time ago.

For anybody with a decent ammount of memory (ie over 512k on Xp or more than 1mb on Vista) running Treewalk makes a big difference in that you will always be able to open site you have visited before and most popular sites without using an external DNS server.

Treewalk can be found herehttp://treewalkdns.com/ for xp, vista win200 or xp just down load the exe installer file for version "Hawk 8.21" run it and follow the instructions.
