Stainless steel grade

I'm considering whether to buy some stainless bar from an ebay supplier.

Can anyone translate these codes for me?

DIN 17457

STN 17241, W.Nr. 1.4301

Basically, I'm looking for easy machining grade (303?), but generally anything that isn't a pig to machine would be OK.

Hi. Can only help with one and thats the 14301 which is = to 304. Not good for machining. Used for kitchenware + buildings.

14305 = 303 which is about the only 'easy' machining stainless.

ETA 303 Euro norm = X8CrNi18 9

303 French norm = Z8CNF 18 09

DIN 17457 does not seem to be a material spec but a spec for welded tubes fom austenitic stainless

It was the 'welded tubes' reference that confused me too!

I've sent the supplier a question - see if he can give me the old-fashioned reference code.

UPDATE:

He's confirmed that it is 304 - any idea about how difficult it would be to put an M5 thread on one end?

You should have no problems with 304, work with it on a regular basis, drills, taps, dies ok just go steady and use plenty lube!

^^ Wot he said. My favourite lube for this sort of stuff is Rocol. Not the aerosol one but the squeezy bottle stuff. RTL maybe?

Would anyone know what TdT 4512 might amount to? Printed on a piece of stainless steel tube.

TIA

John

Hi John

I'll post this chart and make a wild guess...

The last T is a 1 and the decimal point has faded. ??

409 ? (11% chrome steel)

Cheers
