New tool
ruudbeckers - 18/8/08 at 06:37 PM

Got my self a new tool. I didn't really need it, but i just always wanted one.

Now I only have to buy a proper machine vice, some collets and a lot of mills and then...I can start learning how to use it.

And somewhere in the future I want to convert it to CNC.

Can someone perhaps recomment some nice practical books on how to use a mill? Rescued attachment BF20L.JPG

Very nice

Locost?

I'm attempting to do something similar with a £39 Screwfix pillar drill, a cross vice and some £5 Ebay mill bit specials!! I think mine will explode after milling a few centimetres though unless I stick to very soft alloys....

Take it steady with those cheap pillar drills as too much sideways force can bend the drive spindle as i found out to my cost , but with the aid of a dial gauge and a hammer managed to straighten it to within 1 thou so its as good a new now thankfully as i would be lost without it .

Nice bit of kit ruudbeckers could do with one of those myself as it been a very long time since i used one and would have to swot up on how to use it myself now .

I don't know of any books, but the "Virtual Machine Shop" covers the basics

Allso watch out for the chuck falling out - I use a similar set-up some times and have to hammer it in to the taper.....

Yup- the bendy spindle and lack of proper securing for the chuck have been identifed as reasons why my milling jobs may take longer than planned using the pillar drill mechanism.... If I get really frustrated I'm going to add some re-inforcing for the spindle lower down and secure the chuck with a bolt (there's already a thread in the bottom of the spindle)....

Might be worth trying some Loctite? Don't blame me if you can't get it out
